Please excuse the spelling and punctuation ... I-m in Saanen ( Gstaad). Snow lies roundabout and it-s hammmering it down as we speak .....all at 1000m. I'd love to write more succinctly but a Swiss keyboard which doesn't do what it shows is doing my head in ...If you're not there ..or know someone who is .. its internet bollux ... M /driving up French Alps loooked great ..Swiss and Aosta awful /// then Verbier ...more snow then nothing then Les Diablerets on ..magnifique !

easiski, I'm with you ... Brian and Carled et al are wonderful, but there is at least one thread where living room internet research has been interbred with 'Black magic' yet another guys on/the/spot first runs& amaying photos seem to have less credence than those who havent been there for years !. I confess it did irritate last year when one poster disagreed with what I can see from the window/garden normally * but not today(
Sorry All / too goddam difficult to work/out !

T Bar, Not really any of my business - and most unlike me to have a public conscience - but I actually worry about how some people (especiallly lurkers) perceive 'real information'. I cnfess that in the all-things-skiing I am much less knowledgeable and informed than many hereabouts. I do howver respect tat the general input and 'fact'/informed opinion here has improved since my introduction to it ( and thats special as my presence can have improved neither).

Agenterre,
I think any internet site with public access/ participation has a certain amount of caveat emptor to it and folk using the internet need to be aware of it. Even if posts from people who had definately visisted a resort were the only ones allowed though you would still have the same problem one persons 'great spring skiing' may be anothers 'unbearable mixture of slush and ice'. Different people will perceive the same conditions in different ways.
I reckon that weather forecasts are as important in evaluating likely snow conditions to a resort that I may visit as current snow conditions. The provenance of these forecasts may be slighlty more variable than those of snow conditions but you have to look at that yourself and work out who is relaible and who talks bunk.

Should only bootfitters be allowed to post replies to questions about boots?
And if someone asks about a particular resort, or country, should replies be limited to those who have acutally been there?
I'm getting confused.

Of course not ! Anyone can comment ... but in order to enhance the xperience for the occasional 'lurker' as opposed to you and I ... qualification would help ..
eg,
St Moritz is the world's greatest ski resort ...doesn't have the same cache if followed by ( and its the only one I've ever been to) OR
USA is Best ( followed by ...and I ski 5 times a year ....for the last 20 years and been everywhere in Europe)
Sorry I can't highlight but you get my drift ....

Agenterre, thank you for making my point. So, why should the posting of snow reports be limited to those who live in the resorts?
Sure, on the spot reports are beneficial, but their value is limited to those who are there, or are planning to go there in the next few days. A forecast doesn't need to come from a resort local, nor does historical data.

'SNOW REPORTS' should be for just that. Speculation about what might/if/possibly and downright lies should be on another Forum. The Piste would be prefect. The problem is that most peeps (visitors etc), will not scroll down the screen - I had to yesterday to get to any factual threads.

Anyone can post what they want, where they want. As I said before one way to kill a website or make it uninviting for newcomeers is for established users to start moaning about forum 'etuiquette'. There is none apart from politeness. If you don't like it, don't read it.

please don't. i asked a question the other day and no-one has answered it yet.
i like the way the forum is spread at the moment. factual reports are nice, but forecasts help while away the hours until our trips (and in my case decide when and where i'm going to go - i'm doing the late booking thing again to coincide with a dump).

I quite enjoy the wild speculation and arguments. But you do have to wade through a lot of stuff sometimes to find out real information. For hard facts and minute by minute documentation of snowfall I go to cybervalloire.com where they run a tight ship - you get a stern ticking off if you post in the wrong place or use text language!! But the chief weather man is so keen he drove up to the resort last night to take photos of this morning's snow. When we went to la plagne I used RG's wonderful forum for info. I'm guessing most resorts now have their own cyber community for snow reports?

Too many stickies full stop to my mind which means you can scroll half the page
Personally, if someone says
that snow is on the way....with more authority than a good guess, then I would be pleased to see that possiibilty. If someone on the ground posted a picture then that would be better. I would like them to be tied together as you then have anticipation and confirmation. As long as people know where to look then it should be ok to have both and not confuse everybody.
As for guests, well, it is not too hard to register, so don't need to cater so much for them,IMV

On this topic of actual versus predicted/specualtion how is the actual decided on anyway.
What sort of sampling frame is used? Is it sticking a ruler in a handy place on the mountain that has a 'good reading' for the resort or have they randomly selected points and is it independent?

Not with you there. Can't see that snowheads would be killed off if posters took the trouble to post in relevant sections of the forum. Nor do I think the world would come to an end if the mods popped threads into applicable sections. I'm a daily visitor - but I do not read every section every day. If there is a gem, I don't want to miss it because it's in some irrelevant section. Equally I don't want to wade through yards of waffle if I am trying to get facts fast.
