The Eastern Alps look cold and a bit snowy right through until Dec.
Austria may be on course for a monster season.
The Western Alps look less cold and less snowy.

Lou, metcheck and snow-forecast are both based on NOAA's (the US govt's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) GFS model. Any differences are just because they update at different times.
Anyway, looks like staying pretty cold across the alps for the next few days with a front arriving round about Wednesday, although it currently looks like only a small to medium dump.
Potentially briefly warming up towards next weekend and then more snow arriving

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

brian, small to medium?? It looks like another 30-50cm just in two days......and yes very cold days, perfect for consolidate a good base....

Seems to be getting much colder from about the 16th, but not too much snow... This GFS model is for Salzburg region, Austria...

This morning it was said on the Austrian radio that the snow is likely to stay for the forseeable future (i.e. no warm up expected in the next few days).

DB, sounds like good news.
On the metcheck subject, I quite often find that they get it wrong but they often over egg what it's going to do. If they say it's going to rain hard then it'll probably just rain.
You also have to look at their snow forecasts carefully. I found last year that they'd report loads of snow which was true but only for the tops because the valleys were too warm (in Bad Gastein at least). I had to make my own interpretation looking at the freezing level which is fine but I thought their forecast was a bit misleading.

I believe that's because metcheck don't do any correction for the actual altitude of the places they forecast for, you just get a snow/rain forecast based on the altitude of the nearest GFS gridpoint.
So, for instance, the nearest grid point to Bad Gastein is at lat 47N, long 13E and altitude 1713m. I imagine that's a bit above valley height ?

brian, yep, that's much higher than the town. However they know heights of the town and the top station as it's shown in the freezing level forecast chart. We all love to see those black lines ont he snow/rain forecast chart at the top but I think it can be misleading. I suppose it depends whether your predicting snow at the top or the bottom of the mountain? It does make quite difference.
Cheers

are the gfs models not done at a pressure- 850hpa. i'm sure i read on this forum that this equated to approx 1500m, but that could vary according to ambient local conditions. i could be wrong though.
