Poster: A snowHead
|
Earlier this week, the FIS Council had its Autumn Meeting in Bariloche (Argentina). The most significant item on the agenda was the launch of a project called ‘Bring back children to the snow’. This will be a worldwide campaign to encourage children and families to return to skiing and to the snow. The FIS believes that introducing youngsters to skiing and the snow is vital for the future of snow sports. They envisage that the project will involve governments, schools, tourism organisations and the UNESCO foundation, as well as the ski industry. ...To be launched in the ‘medium term’, the project will be coordinated by a specialised international public relations agency.

The FIS Medical Committee have just brought out a publication entitled 'Children in competitive sports - Clinical implications'. It is written by Rasmus Damsgaard (Denmark), a member of the FIS Medical Committee. It looks at the relationship between intensive training and growth around the time of puberty, and suggests setting a training limit of 15 hours per week, above which careful monitoring should be undertaken.

Easy, just subsidise half term holidays, make them vaguely affordable.

With the proposed changes in UK school holidays this could become a reality.
And for the teachers out there, Chile & Argentina work very well over the UK summer break.

martski and admin: I doubt you were really that serious (so apologies) but a glib "subsidise half term holidays" will attract the voters but may actually make things worse.
The problem with half term is not just the cost: it is the demand (which is of course why the price goes up - it is capitalism at work and also why so many people today are buying the vastly overpriced iPhone).
A simple subsidy will increase demand so you will spend the whole day in lift queues rather than skiing.
There needs to be some fine tuning. Only subidise those with families? And only those families with school age children? And only those families with school age children that go to a school where the half term coincides with the main half term week - in 2008 there are two half term weeks. And why should those going skiing get a subsidy? What about all those families who do something else at half term. The age-old rant at privileged skiers will come out in force.
The problem would be better solved by adopting the French system of not having the whole country go on the same half term week.
