OK, so I guess I can see the attraction (in theory) in jumping from snowy ridges, natural or I guess man made, or riding these snow covered 'pipes' - a bit like a skate boarding park. But why do some skiers/boarders have this prediliction with these 'rails' - as far as I can see all it would appear to do is knacker the base of your skis. What's the attraction folks?

Adrenaline.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Megamum, I cannot see it either - which I guess means you and I are too old.
I cannot see how bringing an "urban" element into skiing fits. Seems one big marketing pose. And doing rails on proper stairs maybe, but to build artificial ones. Kickers and half pipes I can get.
stoatsbrother, Exactly - I just checked out someones photos of the PSB on Fickr and there were these huge artificial rails - I just can't see it.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

it's fo teh Steez
And not only does it knacker your base but proper rail guys take a grinder to the edges and completely de tune them, making them useless for the piste.

Just another set of skills to work on if the snow isn't there. Some folk just can't keep off snowboards and skis. It can get a bit obsessive, mind.

fallliner, I agree. In the summer, skiing the same piste (extremely short Xscape piste) gets boring, so I go when there are rails and kickers out. adds an element of fun, something new to work on, and a whole new aspect to skiing.
Though my background is in skateboard and BMX, so rails, ramps, jumps and tricks are kind of what I do most of the time......
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.

george_1, that's cheating. The point of rails in snowsports is for the skilled to lure the terminally unbalanced into a new and brutal form of self mutilation. As a victim, I now understand.
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

I took advantage of the icy patches at the PSB last week to work on my 360s, I reckon 'make use of what there is' is the best way to go.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

At Castleford they ALWAYS seem to have the slope littered with obstacles - which annoys novice grumpy old women like me!
You know it makes sense.

Agreed, but sometimes it can go a bit beyond a joke:
Martin Bell, about a month after I started skiing I saw someone obtain a similar injury by falling over on the dry slope, effectively they scalped their knee cap and it was left hanging by a flap of skin. Didn't put me off though.

Very rarely do i get sickened by stuff but aaaah come on!
Just to "top" that: Someone I skied with who skis in Japan told me about a time a skier there fell over, and someone skied over his neck. He bled to death.

I'm glad I am hearing these stories after being to the snow park rather than before! I haven't done rails but I like obstacles, I see skiing as like horse riding (which I used do a lot of), without obstacles it's not the same and the more difficult and technical the obstacles the better, like in eventing.
