Poster: A snowHead
|
Trip booked here for first week in March, staying at hotel Dufour which I think is where one of the mountain guides lives. Been trying to find detailed info. on the off-piste but not a lot available. Has anyone personal experience of the area and/or can point me to a source?

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I have a book describing and grading off-piste runs of the 3 linked valleys around the Monte Rosa (Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna), in dual Italian/English called
"Polvere Rosa" by Marco Rizzi and Andrea Gallo, publ;ished by Idee Verticali Edizioni.
But really you need a guide - the Italian 1:25,000 maps you would need with it are not very good (contours only every 20 metres rather than 10metres).

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I doubt it. I bought it when I skied in Alagna - you could probably get them to post it to you if it is still in print.

The head guide's wife runs the Dufour and his guides (used) to congregate in there for a beer and also in the morning, so you should be well placed!! Ask Emanuela to help get you a guide, or the guide website is
http://www.guidemonterosa.com/
They seem to have got a second hotel, so not sure if the guides still hang out at the Dufour or not....

The guide in question is Carlo Cugnetto, their new hotel is in Stafel at the head of the valley 3kms above Gressoney-la-Trinite.
A second guide book worth getting hold of is Freeride Vol 2 (Off the Beaten Track) published by Edizioni Mercurio ISBN 88-86960-37-9

All the guides out of the Dufour are sorted, IMV, and it depends how early you get there as to who you get.

But if you get a recommendation its much better to book them now. One guide we use - when we are skiing with him and talk about the following year, he always has at least one month already booked out!!!
