Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Squaw Valley, 1st week in December?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Got the chance of a free weeks accommodation in Squaw Valley, Dec 2nd - 9th. I can see that the resort opens from Nov 17th. Anyone have any experience of early season over there? Is there likely to be decent snow cover by then?

I know it's way too far out for a forecast, just wondered if anyone had been there that early before?

Free lodgin? Why not? What have you got to loss? In the worst case, you can drive around and do some touring...

Baring unusually bad luck, you'll have some snow. Just how much and how well the coverage is the question. I remember snow as early as October (not enough for skiing, but ruined my mtn biking plan! Wink)

Strangely enough, the snow tend to start about mid to late Nuv. Very handy for the resort to open for the first big big holiday (American Thanksgive)! Sometime the snow stays (I should say most time), sometimes not.

Well the airfare's about £800 Toofy Grin But you're right of course, I just need a bit of 'ammo' to persuade the finance director that it's money well spent, and we WILL get some decent skiing Laughing Lots of replies here saying 'I went there last year, and the snow was fantastic in December', is what I'm really looking for wink Laughing

Squaw is relatively low for that part of the ski world, but its early-season conditions are normally reasonably good.

They blast the upper half of the mountain with manmade if the natural stuff doesn't arrive.

What I should say is "yes the snow will be great, come and ski" because then you will come and at least help out the local economy a little - and I might buy you a drink! Shocked
However.........snow wise things could be a little variable - two years ago the snow was good at that time and we had quite a lot of the mountain open. Last year was dryer so it was one run on mainly manmade snow from the top of the funitel to the base. The man made stuff was hard and skiddy in places, but but better than skiing on rocks! snowHead

pollittcl, Thanks, don't mind the manmade stuff too much. Skied on it last year in December and January at Tignes and Pila and it was OK.

AxsMan, you will probably have a great time then - just watch out for the instructors at Squaw, they're a bit dodgy! Shocked snowHead

Yes the tahoe hills get lots of snow. They should open nov. 17. tahoe also has has heavenly, kirckwood and some others. I have skied squaw and heavenly. I liked squaw better but heavenly is great to. The locals like kirckwood and it gets the most snow.Squaw is kind of a drive from south lake tahoe but that is where all the casinos are and there is'nt much to do at night in squaw. I would go. A good snow is likely and they have good snow making. Lake tahoe is one of the most stunning places on earth. From the top of heavenly you can see the lake on one side and the desert on the other. Good luck. Hope you have fun

AxsMan, Sorry to hear that you won't make it - on the brighter side (for you, that is) we've yet to get any snow! Shocked Although I did ski at Mammouth earlier last week!
