Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ski-ing in Gulmarg, India; advice sought!

 Poster: A snowHead

Hello to all from Neil Neige!
I'd love to ski in Gulmarg this winter and am making vague plans.
I see a few operators offer trips but they charge a flipping fortune e.g. £1400 for one week without flights.
Anyone know how easy/safe it is to make your own way there, sort out accommodation etc? I’m thinking of going in mid Jan. Sounds like you fly to Delhi, then Srinigar, then make your way (somehow) up to Gulmarg.
Many thanks for any info.

Neil Neige, welcome to snowHeads! snowHead

I travelled to Gulmarg in the late 80s, although we got the train & bus to Srinigar from Delhi - if you can fly there from Delhi that would be way way better! We then got a bus from Srinigar to Gulmarg, it's quite a tourist destination for the area - I think we got a tour-type bus rather than a local service but I can't really remember. Probably all changed now anyway!.

As for how safe it is to travel there, the current FCO advice is:
Quote:
We advise against all travel to or through rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir (other than Ladakh), and all but essential air travel to Srinagar. There is a high level of conflict and terrorist violence in Jammu and Kashmir (excluding Ladakh).

Thanks for that Cathy. I've never really done any 'proper' travelling before but I guess it's generally not a good idea to go against the advice from the FCO!
Might get in touch with one of the specialist operators who go there and see what they say.
Cheers.

Neil Neige, also I think if you travel somewhere against the advice of the FCO and then you need to claim against your insurance, you may run into trouble - don't know for sure but worth checking with your insurance comapny first
