A 20-year-old man could go to jail for up to 2 years for throwing a snowball that hit a female acquaintance. Andrew Thistleton, an Australian citizen working at a local ski shop, is due to go on trial on December 6 for third degree assault and harassment for throwing the snowball.
...The snowball throwing incident occurred February 3 this year at a bus stop in Copper Mountain (US). The snowball hit a co-worker, Michelle Oehlert (aged 22), in the side. She complained that the snowball "caused her pain due to a prior injury," a car accident several years earlier.

The key fact here is they were co-workers. This is really a work dispute.

Another reaction, from those physically capable, might be to play judge, jury and executioner when they catch up with a miscreant. That would be unfortunate too.

The fact that the judge took into account various mental problems and did not feel the chap required compulsary detention raises some questions. Attacking aged people at random seems to rule out being set free without further assessment.

Pensioner attacker avoids jail

A man who blinded a second world war veteran in one eye after an unprovoked attack on a tram in south London has avoided a custodial sentence.
Paranoid schizophrenic Stephen Gordon was given a three-year supervision order after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to the 96-year-old, who walks with two sticks.
Judge Kenneth Macrae told Croydon crown court that it was in the "best interests of the public in the future" for Gordon to receive treatment for his condition rather than be imprisoned.
Earlier the court had heard how the 44-year-old had punched his victim in the face on a tram travelling between Sandilands and east Croydon in the afternoon of December 14th last year.
The elderly passenger had been unable to find a seat on the tram and had been forced instead to stand in the aisle leaning on his walking sticks.
Gordon attempted to walk under his arms to get past him but his hat was knocked from his head.
He then called his victim a "b*****d" before attacking him and leaving the train at Lebanon Road after being chased by two schoolchildren.
British Transport police Detective Constable Darren Stenning commented after sentencing: "This was a particularly nasty attack on an elderly man who was obviously very frail and was physically not able to defend himself."
DC Stenning continued: "The blow to the victim's head caused serious injury, which has resulted in the victim losing sight in one eye. And unfortunately since this assault, the victim's health has deteriorated and he now resides in a residential care home.
"This kind of incident should not be tolerated by anyone. British Transport police would like to thank the witnesses, including two schoolchildren, who were able to provide police with vital evidence in this investigation."
