Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Chacaltaya Glacier in Bolivia Closed -- Summer Skiing Finished

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Snow-Forecast.com is reporting that Chacaltaya in Bolivia has finally melted away and is now officially closed.

Chac was the world's highest ski resort, at 17.4k ft / 5.3k meters. It was higher than the summit of Mont Blanc.

Chac was the only glacier resort in the Southern Hemisphere that opened during the Summer season, from roughly Nov to Mar.

There are no Summer ski resorts left in the Southern Hemisphere. And less than a dozen remain in the Northern Hemisphere.

The 18k-year-old Chacaltaya glacier disappeared in only a few decades. There is just a tiny 60-by-20-meter patch left.

More details of the closure here:

Whitegold, I guess in some respects that's sad. But hey, we live in a changing world.

On the upside, the Mont Blanc snow dome has apparently doubled in volume. I guess it's nicked the Bolivian's toys.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

If there's a 60m x 20m patch left then surely it hasn't disappeared Confused

I'm guessing the area doesn't get much snow even though its 5000m up?

It was the most northerly ski resort in South America, so it is relatively close to the Equator. High temps, rather than lack of snow, are the culprit.
