Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Mind over matter - why............?

So why is it that your mind doesn't talk to your body?

I can see me in my minds eye me shooshing down that slope all the edges correct, lovely S shaped curves, separated upper and lower body etc. I know in theory a lot of what is required and can imagine me doing it. So why is it that if your mind is so certain it can't communicate that to your body?

You need to let your body take your mind by surprise, before it realises whats happening and starts worrying too much. The key to lower body/upper body separation is a lack of coordination, but you try and get the pros to admit...

That, plus poor body awareness. I'm always disappointed when I get video feedback because there is a fairly large gap between what I think (or feel) I'm doing and what I'm actually doing.

I got some video feedback for the very first time last season and was very pleasantly surprised by what I saw. There was a large gap between what I imagined and what I saw but it was the other way round. Not sure what, if anything, that says about my mental state! Shocked

Megamum, take stock in the thought that you will be there, some day.
You didn't go to school and automatically start reading. You needed to learn the alphabet first then put the letters together, sound them out and THEN you could read.

There is a phrase used in golf that can be used in skiing as well:

Its that last 6 inches that is the toughest to overcome. The 6 inches between your ears. Wink

Course if you want to get really disney about it then you can improve performance by imagining positive outcomes - I haven't read them but I imagine there's a whole barrage of books on mental ways to improve your skiing, golf etc.

Just hope this works for Jonny & the country as he/they imagine each glorious kick sailing over the bar tomorrow...and the Wallabies as they imagine what shrimp they are going to throw on the barbie back home wink

comprex, my ex's son started reading at 2... many children read well before school age... it seems to be reasonably common amongst reasonably bright children with parents that take the time to read to them...

Also many children read by recognising whole words and that is another method of teaching reading (as opposed to sounding out)...

at least my friend, who is an education specialist in teaching small children, tells me this is the case... IIRC

comprex, me neither - I was stunned when my brother went to school and started sounding words out. It was like "what the F is that stuff he is doing and why... just READ it damn it!" ... took me a while to grasp that he actually did not understand HOW to read.

I would sometimes need help with a word I could not "recognise" .... the first one I remember struggling with was "Delilah" ... but having been "told" the word once I usually remembered it for subsequent sightings (and its meaning)... Of course I did not KNOW anyone called Delilah when I read the story of Samson in my school reader... so I needed to have her name pronounced so I could "read" that...

little tiger, there are many words that it's difficult to "sound out" without knowing what the word says. "Sound", "the", "word", and "out" are some examples.

hyweljenkins, yeah - that is why I found it a weird way to read! I simply learnt that a certain "pattern of squiggles" was a certain sound(word).... as I knew what the sound meant I recognised the pattern to mean something....

It was totally bizarre to me when I found my brother sounding out words to try to read.... I had never conceived that one might do this... it was just not how I read...

My friend was interested when I was recalling my mystification at my brothers learning to read... she is naturally interested in how a "natural reader" would learn to read - as I have no "school of teaching" vested interest or bias...

It is still a little hard to remember learning to read... because I was too young to clearly remember.... but I remember reading well before school age... reading was my favourite past-time....

Yeah,, suspected that, veeight. The hysterical laughter kind-a gave it away. wink Just can't for the life of me figure what I said that would prompt such a milk spewing dig. Hell, can't even UNDERSTAND the dig! Puzzled I can laugh at myself, if I know what the joke is. Perhaps I should down a few beers and try reading again. Laughing .
