I guess it doesn't really count as summer any longer, but I think I've finally blown any credentials I had as a "one-ski-quiver" guy, having just had an attack of the SnowHots and bought two pairs of skis this week, contributing to a total of 4 pairs this year.
Feb:
killed my trusty Legend 8000s - ended up renting for the rest of the season
Bad luck with goggles: bought about 4 pairs, broke 2 (and returned another 2 to shop as they were not fit for purpose, particularly at >€100)
March:
Head S12 boots - replacing some 10yo Salomons
May:
new pair of Dynamic 1.2s 155cm, to replace my knackered Fischer RC4s for slalom racing on plastic.
August:
sold the Fischers (ok, for virtually nothing).
Lost multiangle edge sharpener and files. Bought a new load of ski tuning gear as replacement.
September:
bought a second pair of Dynamic 1.2s 155cm, while prices are still good, as the edges on the pair bought in June are being hammered and won't make it to next year's race season. Old pair demoted to practice skis.
Found the multiangle edge sharpener and files
Thursday:
Black Diamond Kilowatts, 185cm
Fritschi Freeride+ bindings
Black Diamond Mohair Mix STS skins
Barryvox Pulse transceiver
Today:
Atomic Race Dept SL11 165cm + bindings, for race-training on snow (2nd hand)
Slalom gloves (Reusch, "Neon orange" backs will be visible at +100m in <10m visibility )
More goggles (dirt cheap this time)
Few pairs of socks
Still to come sometime soon:
Lightweight (Paclite or similar) jacket
Maybe some new ski pants - duct tape holding the ar$e of my existing ones together is not 100% secure
Some normal gloves than don't get saturated in anything more than a heavy mist.
So that's 4 pairs of active skis (+ 2 dead pairs lurking in a cupboard): 3 slalom and 1 all-mountain. Good job I don't do enough GS to need my own skis.
My poor credit card

Graham - I still think I can top that...... must get to doing an inventory soon.... credit card was hurting hard although nearly cured that....
I think I have bought 2 pairs of GS skis, 2 pairs of slaloms, 1 pair of "fatter" skis.... remember getting mitts... did not need goggles because I picked up 2 pairs in march (very cheap)... but I seem to recall getting tights, thermals, fleeces, jackets, pants, socks, vest...
In the market still for
a) Ski bag (mine is on least legs)
b) Snow capable tent -I'd like an Olympus for longer trips and maybe a lighter tent for other uses
c) AT-gear
d) snow shoes
e) Snow bag(have my brothers but could do with news one eventually)
f) Down mat(easier than a second mat to take with the Thermarest)

Hurtle, my Australian friends have offered to take me back country skiing.... for them that means snow camping for up to 1 week at a hit.... if I am going to sleep in the snow I insist on a safe warm bed... So I guess I am learning about slope stability and snow cave building, and how to bed in a tent in a gale....
I posted video of one of my friends brother's telemarking.... but the tele guys here did not like it... we all think he rocks!!!

little tiger, ah yes, telemarking - need to make my mind up soon whether to be serious about these lessons we're having, and if so get some tele skis of my own too (oh and boots as well).
I don't expect to be looking for snow-camping stuff. I love AT trips - but only provided there's a nice warm hut at the end of the day with good grub and plentiful plonk on tap. I really ought to have a second ice-screw though, and I do really need a lightweight iceaxe .

GrahamN, yeah... they assured me I should start looking for AT gear - then work towards light touring gear later.... I could probably just scam room in a tent if I carried part of same.... but I am keeping an eye out for good deals as my tent is only 3 season... They promise I do not need to learn to tele.... they would happily teach me - but will still let me go with them on AT...
In Australia if you can reach a warm bed then it would be "frontcountry" not really back country... like the difference between car camping and real bush walking. I hate tents with generators with a vengeance and the noisy louts that populate them even more.... nothing worse than the last night of a multi day trip being spent with these folks!
You could call my favourite "run" at home backcountry on your terms - ride ski lift to top of resort... ski out of resort (small hike) ski down to road... a good car shuffle set up before hand allows beer to be ready (bury in snow or sink into creek).... and I have even organised a gourmet picnic "lunch".... I have always had real backcountry as an aim for my skiing.... soon I may get there.... I want to do a Wilderness first aid course and some snow cave building etc.... huts are emergency shelter only even in summer and many people have died trying to reach them in winter... tents are a necessity IMV... So I will start looking at collecting some gear - maybe even a titanium spork

GrahamN, it's a slipery slope!
20 years ago, I was invited to go "snow camping" by x-c ski. I thought it was a joke!
Instead, I started backpacking in the summer, then in late summer, then...one day, I poked my head from the tent and found a foot of powder outside!!! (Oct. Tahoe high country)
Surprised at how warm I was inside the tent, suddenly the whole concept of winter camping was no longer so far fetched any more!
I still only have a 3 season tent and at the moment don't have plan to get a 4 season one. Nor learning to build a snow shelter. But if in a few years time, I found myself digging snow caves and putting up winter tents on snow, I would simply feel it's perfectly natural a progression...
I'm not planning nor training for such expeditions. It just could happen without my purposely wanting to. It could also happen to you!
