Has anybody skiied in Hokkaido (North island of Japan)?
I'll be going out to Gunma-ken for a few weeks next winter which is in nice easy distance of the Japan Alps (Nagano etc.) where I've done a few days skiing, but just wondering whether anyone thought it's be worth paying for an extra flight to try the north island.......

Thanks Laundryman. I've head of the same 'big feet' problem before, even in resorts close to Tokyo that are slightly more international.... (though not very).
My feet are a size 8 and I'm a woman- they look at me like I'm a disfigured freak

Bexen, irrespective of the skiing, I found Hokkaido to have a very different feel to Honshu (at least the bits I've been to). Almost like British Columbia: one big city, with a relaxed and safe feel, and a boundless outdoors. I'd be tempted to pop over!

Bexen, there's a big forum on www.snowjapan.com where you can read lots of stuff. On the north island Niseko is highly rated. Read reviews of it here, on goski.

I have skied Niseko( Actually about four resorts but you can get a combined lift pass and they all link on the mountain), well worth the effort though it can I believe get pretty cold early in the season. Hokkaido generally is said to be much snowier than the main Island due to winter storms crossing the Sea of Japan.
Contrary to popular opinion it is not particularly expensive. There is also a reasonable amount of English spoken in Niseko as it is fairly well known to Australians. Though most of the signposts are in Japanese which can make navigation 'interesting'.
