Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Highest 'regular' skiing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Listening to Michael Palin discussing how high he had got to last week made me wonder as to how high I have ever been (excluding planes of cours).
The four resorts that came to mind were Argentier:3842m, Breckenridge:3962m, Tignes:3456m, Val Thorens:330m. So my highest know skiing is at 13,000 feet in Breckenridge.
What surprised me was the height difference between Argentiere and Tignes considering that Tignes has year round skiing and Argentiere closes in April/May. Height facts taken from SCGB in case of error.
I remember getting breathless in Argentier climbing down the steps from the cable car. Breckenridge was far more serious. Due to the height of the resort I found my appetite for beer dulled for a week!!

Highest resort I have been to is Loveland, CO.

The base is at 3231m with the top being 3965m (from skiclub website).

I wonder if this resort has the highest base in the world?

stuarth, Regular? I'm sure that some obscure volcano with a tow rope is going to be higher, but I was thinking of the sort of resort that we fequent regularly.

Portillo and Valle Nevado (to name a few) are proper resorts - though a bit further away than the 'normally frequented' ones.

stephen bleakley, Oddly the link you have gives Loveland as the highest in North America at 12,700 feet, but the Breckenridge site confirms the SCGB site as 12,998 feet. However SCGB shows Loveland as highest by 2 metres.stuarth, Regular for users of this site not the odd Yak or drug baron. Having said that both are lower than Breckenridge anyway.

Cymru am Byth, I think the figures quoted on SCGB (and on the Breck website) are for the highest point you can ski from.
If you look at the Breck trail map then you will see that the highest point quoted is only accessable by hiking.

Breck is planning lift access to just short of that point - see this story for a map of the proposed lift:

Loveland (like Breck) has hike-to terrain that is higher than the highest lift - hence the differing figures.
I thought I heard somewhere that Chacaltaya had closed, which would be a shame as it was head and shoulders above the rest.
