I run a small chalet company and, as usual at this time of year, am looking for staff. For the first time ever I’m struggling to find them.
Any feedback on where snowheads and others are looking for jobs + thoughts on why people don’t seem to be applying. Are the traditional seasonnaires too saddled with student debt to contemplate going and enjoying themselves in the snow?
Any ideas very welcome – as are applications!

ps your site doesn't work in opera, validate as correct (x)html, or meet accesibility standards: as well as being illegal under law it shows a disrepect for people who may wish to ski but also need *YOUR* site to work properly. Have a stern word with your web chappie.

Yup, do have some ads running on natives at the mo - they certainly seem to be the biggest site. Slow moving on things coming through though - particularly tricky to find people with skills coupled with a bit of a spark to them.

nbt, thanks for the heads up re opera (which I have to honest I'd never heard of) and accesibility issues. We are planning a full revamp of the site at the mo and these points will be passed on to the web guys.

ctskifam, Judging from the ads in The Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine you are not alone in finding recruitment difficult.
Have you tried advertising on www.latania.co.uk. Which has a resort workers section?

boredsurfin, could be worth a shot, thanks. Might be able to tempt people up to Les Gets / Morzine.

BernardC, work does get in the way of all kinds of more exciting things, true!
Resorts are at 1000m/1200m so it may be that poor snow last winter and global warming hype is pushing workers higher.

ctskifam, If it becomes a problem, perhaps you might consider recruiting in Eastern Europe. I met a few owners of Chalets & hotels last season who had specifically recruited there. ( Yoda, will know to whom I refer ... ) The consensus was the most peaceful 'staff issue' year ever.

BernardC, Nice idea but not sure that with recent changes to employment regs in France we'd stand up to scrutiny by the authorities. Tempting though...

ctskifam, If you have a reputable catering college in your area it may be worth advertising if they have an HND/degree course.
I presume you are at the London Ski show, handing out flyers in the area may help particularly the afternoon before the Natives party night

This is not true - it is NOT illegal for a website to fail to meet accessibility standards. Ideally, websites should try to meet them but it is in no way illegal. Since this is a commercial site it can pretty much do what it likes, although it's nice to be as inclusive as possible. A govt website has slightly stricter requirements, but again, it is not "illegal under law" if it does not comply with DDA. There are three levels of DDA requirements - level 1 is not difficult to achieve for most sites.

I imagine that any worker from any EU country can work perfectly legitmately in France. The people I referred to 'do it by the book'.
However, having lived with our French cousins (bless them) for many years in the past, I do realise they have a particular coloured lens arrangement for viewing and interpreting EU legislation ......

I agree. The "it's illegal" does sound a lot meatier than you should make all efforts to comply with . . ! And I'm with you in that it's worth highlighting issues with business websites at whatever level. I didn't want to sound contradictory with your post; you are correct in that DDA is important and business websites should offer their services in an inclusive way. I just felt the need to dilute the possibility that business owners with poor websites were criminals.
There hasn't been a UK legal challenge yet, and since the act is very vague, in that one needs to make reasonable efforts to achieve compliance, it's hard to imagine many (small business) website owners being prosecuted. We build sites for Govt bodies an we are required to delivery compliant sites. Certainly, using video, for example can present issues if there is no alternative source material and finding resource to transcribe a video can be a challenge!
Anyways . . . this has gone right off (piste) topic now . . .

Having recently got a job as a chalet host for this season - no rich daddy to pay for an instructor course and plus I'm nearly 30 and actually enjoy cooking.
Anyway for my two peneth my interview was in May so maybe start applying earlier, I realise that's no help here. Advertisement wise I looked on Natives, seasonaires and generally googled for chalet jobs - though I applied through the company website. Also I'd put a post on here.

I think Natives is the best way to recruit - but isnt there also a bit on Chalets Direct Site? Same as 5stitches, I got my ski job ( 2seasons ago) back in May so maybe next year?
Eastern Europe? I cant see the difference in French legislation between employing Brits and say Poles? we're all in the EU arent we?

No, some nations require work permits for the new members to the EU, in Britain this isn't the case but in Germany it is and I imagine it's the same in France.

[quote="BernardC"]ctskifam, ..... it may be that work interferes with staffs skiing aspirations .....
Having stayed with Ski Famille in Les Gets I can say that work did not seem to interfere too much with our chalet hosts skiing /socialising. This should not be taken as a criticism as we were always well looked after with great meals. He just seemed to work and play hard and have things well organised although how he managed on so little sleep I am not sure.

Thanks kevinrhead, glad he juggled it about right. Was getting a bit nervous there. I'm not sure how they do it either. Looking back to my own seasons (many years ago) I went straight from winters to summers but then slept through October and November. Seemed to work at the time.

I think so... I think young fowks in general have to take things a bit more carefully these days... :/
I wonder if, with the emphasis on family breaks, it might be worth looking on some childcare sites?? And maybe posting on Gumtree, which is free, widely read by the right kind of people (I would think?) and well indexed by Google?

firebug, hello again! Giving gumtree a punt at the mo but lots of applications are from antipodeans and South Africans who would be tricky to employ unless they also have a UK passport. We'll get there eventually - will have a rummage for childcare sites that may work.

ctskifam, We have noticed a reduction in applications for this season. I reckon they are all of to the States and Canada as they think the snow is going to be better! We know of at least 10 of last years chalet workers (4 of them ours) who are off stateside this winter.
To anyone that is reading this looking for work we still need a Chalet Chef and Assistant (could suit couple).!!

imo you'll find nobody is around to work because there is nowhere left for people to live in resorts where all the english are buying chalets that get used 2 weeks a year. That's the case where I live, no sooner can they build they get sold and remain empty. The staff have nowhere to live so move away.

I don't know but I'd speculate that chalet slavery giving little opportunity to ski and very limited financial reward may not be as appealing as earning healthy money temping in UK over the summer then purely living as a ski-bum. Also plenty of outfits offering Canadian accomodation may be offering a more glamorous working alternative to the same old French destinations.

fatbob, I skied from 9:30 - lifts close 5 days a week, day off not included. If you're a crap chalet girl/ boy then you'll be shackled to the sink, if you can cook/ organise/ entertain - its good clean fun!
