With the Atomic boot camp on the way, I thought it would be interesting to track snow height on the glacier, wished I'd known what it was a few weeks back before the recent snow, but today tignes.net reports it as :
Temperature 39 °F
Fresh snow height 0 "
Total snow height 16 "
cheers,
Greg

err, so why would they think that UK based readers would want measurements in imperial and Fahrenheit? I know you just won your EU battle but this is surely too much. Centimetres and Celsius please!

My choice would be celsius and inches - best of both worlds !
|
|
|
|
|
|
I get very confused: I prefer Celsius for cold weather, but Fahrenheit for hot weather; metric for snow depths and ski lengths, but imperial for how tall people are; imperial for how much I weigh, but metric for buying fruit and veg.

I'm with rob@rar too, funny how we tend to do that. I also use imperial weights for people (stone, not pounds) but measure small liquids in metric, big liquids (ie pints and gallons) in imperial. I have sorted of drifted into cm for snow depth, but that's a very recent thing. Surface area of course, is measured in poles

This still confuses me, Do you lay the Pollsih peeps down and take an average or is it the amount of floor space they take up or is it some confusing measure of the benefits they can claim here and send back to Poland

While we're on the subject - am I the only one who finds the American system of advertising the size of a ski area in acres? This is meaningless to me.
Surely you could arrive to find one very short piste that is several acres wide?

|

marmalade, cos I guess in N America you can ski anywhere within bounds - there's not quite the same concept as on piste and off piste

cathy, Yeah, I can understand that but I still wouldn't be able to judge what constituted a good sized area. My mind doesn't work in acres. Also it would be useful to know how much of the area was groomed/piste as some of us aren't good enough skiers to be able to access the whole area.

plym, I spoke to the tourist office yesterday.
The lift opening hours are 8:45 - 14:45.
There are pistes that are reserved for race camps so the only pistes available for the general public are glacier and 3500, the 2 reds at the very top. Leisse and Rosolin as yet do not have enough snow for them to open.

Anyone know if the fixed grip beginners lift is open. I'm heading out with a friend who is a total beginner.... but not til late November. Stepping straight onto icy red runs might be quite a big ask....!

^ didn't notice a "fixed grip beginners lift", didn't know there was one... actually I don't actually know what a "fixed grip beginners lift" is, unless you mean a rope tow?
Anyway, I wouldn't recommend taking a total beginner onto the glacier and certainly wouldn't without their being accompanied by an instructor. There was a total beginner out earlier this week whilst I was there and she was all set not to go back up after skiing with friends the first day and having an awful time, she was booked in with an instructor for the following days though and after some hairy moments on the second day ended up enjoying herself after that.
Having said that though I wouldn't fancy snowploughing all the way down any of the runs that were open this week with conditions as they are but I guess it might soften up by the time you go out.

A fixed grip lift means that the hangers do not detach from the rope, unlike an auto stacking poma where the hangers come off the line and stack in the bottom station until released on demand.
Fixed grip pomas are much slower and are designed for begginers (and snowboarders where as detachable Pomas can run at line speeds of up to 6m/s.

motatapu, I did see it running last week, albeit slowly (and no-one on it). It appeared to be serving a small fun park that they'd built alongside it (but no-one was using that either ).
Probably easiest for your friend would be to use the blue rosolin and its lift.
