Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Elan Magfire or Flow for low-intermediate?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been considering buying a set of Elan skis for next year.
I was thinking of the Flow 6.2 since I'm a relatively low-level intermediate, but I've heard recommendations here to get a low Magfire (like the 6) since it can handle changing conditions. Not sure if it's more difficult to ski slops with it.

The magfires are more expensive, but I was able to find a last year model for cheaper. Which way should I go?

Is there a difference between the '06-7 and '07-8 models? Both the flow and the magfire look complete different. The new design is much better, but I'm not sure if it's just aesthetics or if there's a real difference. Also, the Elan site shows the flows with ".2", but I've seen online a ".1" version.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I personally always prefer to set my sights high and look to get a ski that I can improve into, though you have to be careful to not get something you can't handle.

The magfire 6 doesn't exist any more, and i'm not sure what last year's one was like.

I've only tried the magfire 12 and 14, thought they were wicked and loved the extra width for hitting the slushy stuff at speed.

The Magfire 8 has lithium in it. Wow, how exciting. The flow 6 doesn't. That probly means it's softer (easier but not as good as you get more aggressive)..
The magfire has a better binding system. I'd say that's a fair bit of what you're paying for between the two skis.
The flow 6 is a cap construction, as is the magfire 8 as far as i can tell. The magfire 10 and flow 8 have proper sidewalls (better grip on hard stuff).

Both the .1 and the .2 are out this year... as far as I can tell from the catalogue, they're exactly the same ski with different top plates. They have all of the same construction features and the same dimensions.

Demo'd the mag 8's this year and found them to be a good ski.
Would class myself as an mid to upper intermediate lazy skier and found they had good flex, responded well at high and low speeds and also handled well in a range of conditions, bullet proof icey in the morning and slush by afternoon (gotta love aussie ski conditions...).

Have not tried the elan flow so could not compare but after skiing on the mag 8's I am looking at purchasing them (or might go to mag 10's).

Maybe consider the SpeedWave (10s) - they are a fine ski.
Very nimble, haven't tried them in porridge or off-piste yet but moguls, steeps, groomers (blue, red & black) are totally manageable.

Well pleased with this ski - should give you a wide range of ability from low intermediate to advanced as nzbassist says.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

The Mag8 as recommended above is a good ski. Will take you to the next level without having to jump into another purchase right away. If you go with the Flow, you'll likely grow past it quickly and need to upgrade before you know it. Whereas the Mag8 will be forgiving enough to be okay and advanced enough to go into your future of skiing.

As 2Rettes, said, there are some good options in the speedwave line. They are somewhat rigid so they will get you through those chopped up days.
