The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences says Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand has erupted, sending multiple lahars running down the mountain. Reports are coming in that the mountain is still glowing after the eruption and small earthquake at 8:30pm. One of the lahars has run through Whakapapa Ski Field and another down the Whangaehu river.
...Although not as major as the lahar in March this year, Scientists are calling today a significant event, although the full extent of it will not be know until the morning.

Wow. Just got a call from my parents. I'm from the foot hills of Mt Ruapehu. Unfortuatly this time there have been some injuries as people were camping in a hut on the sumit when it erupted.

That's not the case. New Zealand includes volcanoes and it is a geologically active area, but it is an area of continental land mass with uplift as a result of a tectonic subduction zone. A good comparison would be the Andes, rather than an island volcano like Hawaii.
