Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

September snow this week

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday look promising in the Alps.
Austrian glaciers expect 50-100 cm fresh snow.
This map indicates the snow line for Thursday.

A mate who subscribes to snow-forecast.com got a report through that says it's looking good for the alps this month. It said there will be slushy snow but at leats that's a base covering - let's hope for shedloads!! Smile

It might help with coverage on glaciers, but snow this early doesn't make any difference to the ski season because any cold spell will be followed by warmer weather which will melt it all. It will be another couple of months before average temperatures are low enough to preserve snow for all but the highest slopes. But it's nice to see Smile

100cm at 3k meters would be a most welcome covering for the fast-depleting Alpine glaciers.

well, I was thinking of a late summer trip to bag the Grossglockner - however the forecast from http://bestof-grossglockner.at/wetter.php shows:

Dienstag 04.09.2007 Gipfel Höchstwerte: -10 Grad. Gipfel Tiefstwerte: -13 Grad.
Mittwoch 05.09.2007 Gipfel Höchstwerte: -10 Grad. Gipfel Tiefstwerte: -16 Grad.

That translates as summit high temp = -10deg low temp = -16deg on Wednesday .... brrrrrrrr

skinutter, Hey - September to November are a great time - nice mild atlantic winds means lots of windsurfing in the UK - just in time to get into shape for the winter skiing season. Just as everyone else is getting upset due to end of summer windsurfers are looking forward to the best few months of the windsurfing year. Get another hobby and make autumn something to look forward to.

waynos, couldn't agree more, as a fellow windsurfer i can't wait for this settled weather to end and for the autumn gales to arrive! My favourite time of year - water is warm, air is mild, short-sleeved wetsuit can be worn until end of october normally. Plus I've just bought a new waveboard...

As said any alpine snowfall is irrelevant until late November as it will all melt before then.

Heard on the Austrian radio that snow chains were required on some roads this morning.

Kaprun had 7cm of snow depth at the Alpine centre (ca 2000m) yesterday, today the snow report is showing 45cm. Laughing snowHead

This hill - Hochkar - has a very good historical snow record.

It is snowing nationwide in Austria:
Sölden - 30cm in six hours
Kitzsteinhorn (Kaprun) - 50cm so far, 100cm expected by the week-end, resort reopens on Saturday
Dachstein - 100cm expected by the week-end
Most resorts at 2000m received 30cm so far

Zugspitze (Germany) - 60cm

It looks like the snowline in the Eastern Alps is around 1200m today, pushing back up to 3k meters by Fri. It is exceptionally low and deep for this time of year. Temps are barely above freezing in Munich today.

kitenski, last December was not good in Austria, except for Obertauern which gained a lot from the lack of snow elsewhere..

Another good news from Hintertux, 40cm fresh snow and now all the lifts are running

Hi Martin,

Yes we will. We know him quite well because one of our best friends in the village is the person who runs the ski hire shop and Robert's ski school is run from there as well. All our guests use the shop and the school.

He's a friendly person- was he on the circuit the same time you were??

If you ever fancy a visit you are very welcome to stay here!!- excellent runs!!

We overlapped by a couple of years. I didn't really get to know him, because he was an Austrian superhero and I was a young hack starting at the back of the pack. Also he was a slalomer and I soon started specialising in downhill. In fact, Robert was quite an innovator, one of the first to start "shinning" the gates.
But recently he has been working with Atomic on the SIGB ski test and we have all discovered what a pleasant bloke he is.
If I'm ever headed towards Mühlbach I'll get in touch!

Yes he mentioned he had met you or Graham at the last winter Olympics games in Italy -I think he was commentating or something. He does a lot of testing for Atomic he was away most of last year. The company is only about half an hour away from here.

That would be nice we always have a good stock of English tea and sometimes sausages and bacon. Its funny the things you can't get here- luckily we get people visiting us form the UK often to re-supply us.

140 cm on the Zugsputze as of 8:00 this morning, and more forecasted for the next three days. That's significantly more than was there at New Years.

Obviously the snow at lower elevation will all melt away, but up high it could be the start of a nice base. And it's the wet, heavy variety that sticks really well to rocks.

Eastern Austria gets the biggest dump again. These resorts, which are probably unknown in Britain, are located at 1500-1600m.

Tauplitz 100cm, Loser 90cm, Ahornkogel 80cm, and Krippenstein (this one is higher) 70cm

Snow chaos in Austria, the motorway was closed by Flachau, hikers and local farmers (!) are swept by avalanches in September!

Lots of farmers are really concerned about their cows! Many haven't yet been brought down from the alms (high pastures) for the winter, and now they are snowed in. Farmers either can't get up to them, or can't bring them down because of risk of avalanche!

Didn't something similar happen last year in Colorado, with a lot of ranchers losing their cattle in the big early snow storms? I seem to remember something about helicopters making hay dumps because the roads were impassable and the cattle had no food.

Even lower resorts like Saalbach seem to have a fair sprinking. The current web cam shows more snow in Saalbach then when we arrived in January last year! Not sure I fancy the ski from where the white stuff finishes though Little Angel
