Following on from last post - thanks for all replies. Have decided to buy helmets now. What is a reasonable price to pay and is there anything I should look out for when making a purchase? Thanks again

My advice: if you wear a lilac all-in-one ski suit, don't buy an orange helmet

A helmet is really something that needs to be tried on. I suggest you head down to a ski shop and pick up some bargains from last year (or at least find what make, model and size you need before ordering online)

loatie, get the ones that fit best.
Stick it on yer nut. Don't fasten the strap, but shake your head. The one that moves least (or not at all) without crushing your skull, is the best fit.

The ones with vents are good if your head is likely to get hot. We've got Giro Fuses that have a switch that you can flick and open your vents without taking off your helmet.

You want a snuggish fit - one that when you rock the helmet forward/back slighty it moves the skin on your forehead.
If you tend to run hot then look for a model with good ventilation - some have removable plugs or a sliding lever to open holes.
Remember to take your goggles with you to check compatibility/fit etc or buy them after you've found your helmet.
And only gapers wear sunnies with a helmet

loatie, Try it on first - I bought one over the Internet after following all the measurement instructions, it ended up being too big and got sent back.

loatie, i find the vents and removable ears flaps on my head one are great (and it was free last year with a fall line subscription )
with the ear bits fitted i've been accused of shouting but tend to find the helmet is warm enough without them on all but the coldest days

What's a gaper? (I hate wearing goggles unless I absolutely have to, but wear sunnies all the time.)

I got a Pro-Tech one which only has a couple of vents, although it has removable ear pieces.
I was skiing last seasons half term week, in Fleece-only conditions, without removing the ear pieces (as the old lugs get cold at speed) and never suffered with a sweaty head - I'm not convinced those vents are such a huge plus point.

CEM, true. If their boots fit you, their helmets will too.
I'll echo spyderjon's comments - take your goggles to avoid gaper gap!

Wear The Fox Hat, Unfortunately my goggles - the narrow sort bought, pre-helmet, in an effort to achieve the least possible head-claustrophobia - also leave a gap, which I know to be A Bad Thing. Actually, in terms of safety, I can't see why it's a bad thing, the bit of your head with the goggles over it isn't protected from severe impact anyway, so what does it matter if there's a gap? Anyway, what's wrong with helmet & sunnies? I just don't get it.

spyderjon, rob@rar, sorry, I was burbling on while you were posting. But see what I posted - the bit below the helmet isn't protected anyway, so what mattereth a gap or not?

I'm sure there's a thread discussing that very question.

loatie, look out for a top to the helmet and three sides. One side should be missing and this is where your face goes. Fasten the loose things in a reef knot under your chin. Test it's effectiveness by head butting the lifties. They like the recognition and can't get enough of it.

make sure this is no gap (not even a small one) between the top of your goggles and the helmet, in cold weather (-15+) and wind chill this can cause a few problems
