Australia's Snowy Mountain ski season draws to a close

The ski season has begun to wind up in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. The Mount Selwyn resort closed on Saturday, but the other resorts in the area will keep the lifts operating until the long weekend. Meanwhile in New Zealand, Canterbury's ski season has finished early for many of the region's skifields.
Mount Cheeseman, the Craigieburn Valley ski area, Mount Lyford, Mount Olympus, Hanmer Springs and Fox Peak have closed as north-west winds strip what little snow they have left. Mount Potts is open for heliskiing only, while Temple Basin shut before it even opened.
The Porters ski area is open but could close soon too. Mount Hutt ski area, Broken River, Ohau Snow Field and Mount Dobson are still open. Roundhill is closed this week but will reopen on Saturday.
The early closures follow one of the worst starts to the Canterbury ski season. Many Canterbury fields did not open until August, while Mount Hutt and Porters got through on artificial snow. Broken River, which has more snow than most, expects to remain open through the school holidays.
Skifields elsewhere in the South Island have fared better, with the Rainbow Valley Ski Area, near Nelson, recording one of its best seasons. Queenstown and North Island skifields are also reported to be having a reasonable season.
