Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Beijing bans the construction of new ski slopes

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
China's capital, which already boasts 10 ski resorts, is to ban the construction of new ski slopes, golf courses and race tracks to save land for housing, state media said on Friday.
China's official Xinhua news agency recently lashed out at the proliferation of recreational facilities, saying their construction flew in the face of the realities of scarce land, tight resources and widespread poverty...

The rich middle class is expanding year by year fuelling demand for popular western sports such as golf and skiing. Chinese style rapid development has resulted in around 10 ski 'resorts' sprouting up in the area around Beijing since 1999. By international standards though, they are fairly underdeveloped with the most extensive boasting just 7km of pites.
The irony is that this may just be good for the Chinese ski industry long term. With a moratorium on new resorts, those that exist already may have the opportunity to consolidate and grow beyond simply servicing one of China's notorious passing fads.

Before you book your tickets the photo in the link isn't from Nanshan which actually looks like this:

Sorry guys. I see to remember another news story that had fake resort photos a month or so back.

It is not so much a land but a water shortage that is the problem. Beijing is very dry, albeit cold and a lot of the snow is artificial.

With the population of China? Yes. In some regions. Though Beijing isn't even close to being the worst.

While I'm inclined to agree with the water shortage being an issue. Land shortage is the excuse the goverment use to NOT allot more land for Golf course and ski resorts. Typical Goverment double talk?

And all that talk about poverty and such strikes me as someone is envious about the newly minted middle class taking up typical western hobbies.
