Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

After he apologises for slagging off my Sports Medicine doctor, who he stated did not know what he was talking about. That guy was a very highly respected doctor. I was sent there by my colleagues for a reason.
Check out some profiles of Australian Institute of Sport athletes, and the reputation of the AIS before you get so happy to deride a doctor just because he is not living in the UK.

chris boarder, Thankyou for your input, I may get a ski brace for my ACL and other people at my hospital physio sessions use them for riding bikes, but this discussion is covering other ligaments, whilst on snow.
I also understand the protection to be gained from a knee brace to the ACL is highly disputed (for skiing, I dont know about motorcross).
Welcome to Snowheads by the way, just try not to steam in with controversial opening posts next time Cool

little tiger, my reading of what chris boarder wrote was that it had absolutely zero to do with slagging off any doctor - or, more accurately, the hearsay advice of a doctor, given to a third party, for a specific injury suffered by that third party - in any (unspecified by him) country of the world. What he actually suggested was that dk100 should not ask people on an internet forum for advice on an undiagnosed injury, but rather seek direct professional help. Your reading is inaccurate and unjustifiably defensive, and your response totally out of order.

Hurtle, if he meant that there was absolutely no need to quote me... as many others had given advice in the same circumstances... note that I had already told the OP he should seek an accurate diagnosis.

Hurtle, I have to agree with little tiger, if he was offering his own experience like the rest of us, there would be no need to quote and specifically suggest a professional.

His post was slightly badly framed. I forgive him that as he is new here and has no reason to have malacious intent. But as always, context is vital. Look back and pick any other post he could have quoted with similar results.

I have no argument with seeing a pro - I was in a swiss doctor's surgery withing 30 mins of my incident, and in A&E in the UK two days later - in the system.

Sounds like good advice little tiger provides here. Wouldn't you agree, chris boarder?

By quoting comments of little tiger's which you extracted from a tangent discussion on the benefits of taping vs braces, then following with your suggestion that professional consult should be sought, you appear to be suggesting little tiger's opinion was in opposition to your own. If that's not the case, then why quote her? Why not just state your piece without unjustly picking on someone else? Curious first post.

And her name is little tiger, not kitten. Address her as such in the future, or don't address her at all.

dk100, I hope that you have managed to get all the information that you need as I sense this thread will now deteriorate into a slagging match.

FastMan, lampbus, yes, we all know (well, maybe not all, but most) that you guys are best buddies with little tiger. But this thread now has the feeling of ganging up in the playground on the new kid at school. Not very edifying imv rolling eyes

Ray Zorro, agreed. This kind of thing is the reason I mostly stay out of this area of the forum.

Is absence of a sense of humour a requisite for posting in this thread? Puzzled

dk100, It is not always easy to tell who is the professional and who is the interested amateur in threads like this. If you didn't already know, it is probably worth me pointing out that Nick L, and Martin Nicholas are both GP's, so (should wink ) know what they are talking about...

Frosty the Snowman, if he was silly enough to read only ONE post out of a whole thread and then just attack the poster on that basis then my comment is pretty apt - although maybe a bit harsh if he is in fact not a sock puppet but just very foolish

I think there's a whole shitstorm out of nothing - its not unknown for a first time poster to quote the post above them when replying to the thread as a whole. Since then its developed along wholly predictable lines in exactly the fashion that deters people from posting in BZK.

For the record I have no specific advice to offer - I have no ACL in one knee - a lot of the time its fine, othertimes its a nightmare after a hard day's activity. Knee performance was definitely improved when I had some torn cartilage cut out. I bought a donjoy brace but don't use it as I'm more worried about it slipping and causing completely wrong movement than I am about trashing my knee further.

Not my argument, but just an observation: there was a bit of disagreement in advice early in the thread, but the first person who attacked anyone was little tiger laying into chris boarder good and proper. I see no "slagging off my Sports Medicine doctor, who he stated did not know what he was talking about" - as he did absolutely nothing of the sort, but merely quoted the previous post to his own and actually then made no reference to its content at all. As fatbob said, not at all uncommon behaviour.

I would say that

chris boarder, as you are new to online forums. I ask your forgiveness for “jumping down your throat”.

The quote function is accessed via the that is on each post. When you hit that icon in my post it inserted my post into yours - which you probably did not notice.
The convention is that if you quote someone’s post then you are responding to them. So I understood you were telling me I needed to speak to someone who was qualified.

By the way your spelling is really not too bad at all you spelt “daunting” perfectly and it is rather tricky and people often get it incorrect.

I'd like to join the others in welcoming you to snowheads, and hope you enjoy the community

Update
=====

Hi I've been to see the consultant this week. The diagnosis was what I suspected a grade 2 MCL tear. When I read up on this it says this type of injury normally heals in 6-8 weeks. I have had this now for 12 weeks and still no sign of healing.... I managed to get a brace out of NHS though woopee! , but I am supposed to be skiing in 4 weeks time??? Its not looking good. He basically said there is nothing I can do but wait for my body to heal. He thought it would be risky trying to ski on it at present. Sad

dk100, kick board and swimming pool - backstroke/freestyle kick only.... and yes you need the kick board so you stay flat in water...

Try 1 leg squats also - but you need to see a sports physio probably to learn to do them right... you want to work the stabiliser muscles not the large ones so much... (Sports doctors version was different from gym one)

Static bike is your buddy.... (I cannot remember clearly but think the doc did not want me on a real bike for a bit)

After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
I have managed to damage my MCL on both knees skiing, one of which i have done twice. Basically its not too bad of an injury, however unless worked on it will remain annoyingly week and with skiing where you are using your knees all the time, this is something best prevented!

Braces are a good idea i think, but you cant allow your knees to rely on them, you always have to keep them strong.

Improving your technique is also a really good idea, im not sure how good a skier you are as i still havn't figured out how to look at peoples profiles (i think this is what i filled in when i joined???) as i am still new on this site! But yeh, a good technique is vital, if you are using your knees in the wrong way when skiing your probably just making them worse (or at least wearing them out!).

I also had physio on my knees and that was definitely another good idea, you dont need many sessions and they worked a treat.

Essentially try not to do it again.....

Thanks for all your replies. I have been going to a sports therapist who has hand manipulated the area and given acupuncture, but unfortunately it does not appear to be responding, so I have therefore booked in to see a specialist through NHS in 3 weeks time. My concern is that I read everywhere that it should have healed by now and even though I can walk on it and even jog gently I cannot kick a football or turn sharply without pain. It is concerning me that it will not be up to the stress that skiing puts on your knee. It is very frustrating. Are knee braces any use?

ligament sprains can be totally recrified with prolotherapy - i have had it, I know there are very vert few people who even know about it and have had many discussions with doctors and physios who know nothing about it and dismiss it simply because they have not studied it or been informed about it...i spent 2 yrs studying it before I had treatment for my back and wish I hadnt waited - it is even more effective for MCL...By the way...anyone who told you it would be 100% after 12 weeks is totally wrong - if you iced tit and took anti inflammatories you have permamnetly weakened it. That is what i dod for a MCL sprain skiing and I felt it for 2 years....i was able to ski on it ok after 8 weeks with lots of training but I was awaer of it for ages. Ligamnets have virtually no blood supply and that is why thye are unable to heal fully. I will give you more advice if you want it and tell where to go but i won't enter into arguments over it with any docs or surgeons or physios unless they actually have experience doing it - and there are orthopedic surgeons in the UK who choose prolotherapy first...but usualy you need a medical osteopath. The entire US ski team had proltherapy on their knees 2005-6...the doc in mexicco likes to call it something else but it is exactly the same treatment my doctor provides...and he trained with this guy !!!!!! I expect this post will provoke some controversy !!
