Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Finder of 'Oetzi the Iceman' vanishes in the mountains

The man who found 'Oetzi', the 5000-year-old man frozen on a glacier on the Italian-Austrian border, has disappeared - also on the mountains.

Helmut Simon, whose 1991 discovery has been heralded as one of the great archaeological finds of the 20th century, went missing in the Badgastein area three days ago while hiking alone... There have been snowfalls across the Austrian Alps and there are fears for his life.

This report from Reuters.

Last December the BBC reported that Simon was in dispute with the province of Bolzano in Italy, where Oetzi has a special refrigerated glass tomb and museum, because he believed he had been unfairly treated for finding the body. This report from BBC Online.

Oh dear that doesn't sound good, I hope that he survives and is found much sooner than Oetzi was

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Some additional detail on this story from today's Daily Telegraph. And here is the website of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, where Oetzi's mummified body is displayed.

From reading a couple of translated German reports this morning it seems that Helmut Simon set out last Friday, telling his wife where he was going - the Gamskarkogel near Bad Hofgastein - but not his exact goal or planned route.

The search was called off on Monday, due to avalanche danger, following a half-metre snowfall. There now seems little prospect of him turning up alive.

It does seem that a sadly unhappy and undefined bargain was struck between him and the authorities who originally dealt with the recovery of Oetzi. The initial tussle between the Austrians and Italians over ownership of the corpse probably didn't help, with Italy eventually winning their argument that it had been lying on their side of the frontier.

One hopes that Mr Simon's disappearance isn't a function of his unhappiness at failing to resolve his differences with the Italians, but he was seeking a high reward: 150,000 to 250,000 Euro.

The story of Oetzi, and the changing theories of how he came to die, has fascinated TV documentary makers for years. Helmut Simon's story, in its more modern context, will doubtless add a chapter to this epic. Hopefully the museum in Bolzano has made proper recognition of Mr and Mrs Simon and their extraordinary chance discovery.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Thanks to a temperature rise to around 10C the search for Helmut Simon has resumed. A helicopter and approximately 100 rescuers have been searching the mountain today.

“… so just who exactly was this iceman and how did he die?”

scientist: “vell, judging by the yellow von piece suit he probably lived sometime in the latter part of the 1980s, zer are many theories as to how Gaperman met his maker, ja. Zee lack of technical outershell, in zee harsh vinter conditions was probably crucial…”

“but why was he in this valley, so far from home?”

scientist: “ahh zat is a good question, vee X-rayed the body, ja, und vee found a little piece of copper wire embedded in ze corpse, zis is part of vot was known to the mountain dwellers of zat age as a “lift pass”. It zeems our man had only bought himself a sector pass but had strayed into the other valley, zere zee agreesive local tribes that controlled the lift system vould not have let him return, having no money he could not pay for zee taxi so he probably just froze to death”

“are there any other theories?”

scientist: “oh ja, plenty, maybe he got disoriented after drinking a lot of intoxicating liquor at the local Gasthof, also, although not an old man, perhaps in his late 30s, he was clearly ill adapted for zee mountains, he had a pot belly and had lobster red skin showing that he was probably from zee lowlands”
