Hello
I am planning to visit - chamonix for a week around first week in march - by myself.
I am looking for recommendations for a 3*/4* hotel or chalet - somewhere close
to the main town - restaurants, bars, transportation.
Since I am going alone - I am thinking I should stay in a Chalet (I have never stayed in a chalet) - as I may have more company to
share some war stories with over a glass of wine.

There's a chalet that specialises in single travellers:

It's in a nice part of Les Praz which is about a 20 minute walk from the centre but I'm pretty sure they shuttle you around if you want. Might be nice? I've never been but heard a couple of good reviews. Otherwise, for central, I like the Hotel Gustavia (Chambre Neuf) - make sure you get a quiet room as the bar's lively in the evening.

mrpow, if you decide to go for an hotel and if you're prepared to spend a bit of money (although it's good value for money IMO) the Albert I is a beautiful family-run hotel, situated just above the station. You can save a bit by staying in the old/main hotel, rather than the new building where the (gorgeous half indoor/half outdoor) pool is - the old rooms are more than adequate, again IMHO. The food is outstandingly good.

LARGEZOOKEEPER, What I meant to add was that it's outstandingly good even if you're staying there on half board, or whatever - that's not always the case if you're staying in a 'restaurant with rooms', you can sometimes be fobbed off with a minimal choice of boring dishes.

The problem with that week is that it's French school hols for Zone C, which includes Paris, so it will be busy. Albert I doesn't (or at least it didn't, I haven't been for some years) ask for a deposit and accepted cancellations until very close to the holiday date, so there's no harm for that hotel, at least, in booking early.

Hurtle, hmmm, 2 michelin stars and I've never skied Chamonix  A little over 2.5 years of hint dropping time till my 40th , worth a go ?

Totally unsuitable for your needs Mrpow but my favorite by far is the 2star Eden in Les Praz. Great food, and all fully refurbished. The wine/cheese waiter is classic.

mrpow, I think the chalet idea is a good one. It's certainly much easier to mix & make friends, & you'll probably be able to find some people of your level to ski with if you want company on the slopes

jbob, I love the Eden too, and the food is superb. Like you say, not really ideal here though. The maitre d' is ace isn't he! He's been there for 20 years.

i second gustavia. its relatively inexpensive. the bar downstairs is great for apres-ski and has good food. your right across from the train station so its easy to get to argentiere and les grand montet in ski boots. and you are right in the heart of chamonix. just make sure if you like to go to bed early get a higher level room away from the bar, it can be loud until around midnight. also the views of mountains (augille du midi and mont blanc) from the train side of the building are fabulous and you cant really hear the train much on that side. the other side will give you views of the town and of flegere i believe, but i haven't stayed on that side.

Stayed in Chalet La sache a few years ago (is it still going? I don't know) Was a great chalet, good food, accommodation and hot tub. Gustavia a good hoel. chambre-neuf for apres ski (must go back he says wistfully).

FAQ
I haven't dared look at the prices - no doubt they have risen since I was there. 
I'd love to go back but, what with one thing and another, I don't think it's going to happen.
