Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

'Biggest American vertical' ski area gains approval

A large part-glacial ski project in British Columbia, which has been under discussion for almost 10 years, has received regional government approval...

The 'Jumbo Glacier Resort', which would feature 1700m (5500ft) vertical of skiing in winter and 700m (2300ft) vertical in summer on substantial glaciers, would offer possibly the most reliable snow conditions in North America, and a greater vertical than Whistler-Blackcomb.

Two further stages in the planning process will occur in 2005, after which the project could obtain full approval.

The Jumbo Glacier Resort is strongly opposed by local environmentalists, who argue that migration corridors of grizzly bears will be cut off by the development. They intend to intensify a campaign against the project.

Reports from Globe & Mail and CBC Calgary.

It will be interesting to see how the election in the spring effects the planning process. The environmental lobby seems pretty strong. It does seem odd that they are planing a resort so remote to the other ski areas. Even if its supposed to be the best skiing in the world.I would have thought that expansion of the existing areas in Whistler or around Banff would be more acceptable and less enviromental impact as roads etc are there already.
