Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

dk100, Once snapped an Hire ski many moons ago. Guess it was on its way out before I gave it its final flex and crack.

I've delaminated a couple of pairs, but never snapped them outright. What does it take to snap a decent pair of skis?

Tried hard to kill my Kneissl Tankers but they held up when I landed straight on a rock.

Hmm. "Decent"? I guess that means 'without other cause you could possibly blame, like glueless mounting into poplar cores causing rot, too many holes drilled in steel topsheets, edge blowouts focusing the flex into a specific point" etc?

I cracked a pair of 10.22s and a jawbone against a tree in Mott Canyon once. Tails crossed Embarassed

Broke a Scott ski and a K2 ski, 2 and 3 winters ago. Both broke just in front of the toe binding. Whoops.

A ski in good nick would be very hard to break, IMV. I could see an knackered pair breaking..happended to a friend once, the tail gave out.

I rammed a pr of pilots 18 inches into a rock and it took 20 minutes to dig out and still looked ok. I didn't trust it afterwards but it didn't break there and then.

Megamum, Yeah I snapped one of mine completely recently skiing at Kaprun or I should say falling. It surprised me a little bit as I thought skis would be more flexible this day and age

On a similar vein, does anyone believe getting ski insurance at a hire shop is a worthwhile expenditure? Sometimes I pay up, sometimes I don't. When I do I always get the uncomfortable feeling I'm being fleeced Confused

noggy, you're hardly being fleeced - take the insurance and walk away when you lose/break equipment, or don't bother and pay for what you break. Fairly straightforward, I'd think.

dk100, broke Rossi 9XKs ramming into a rosk I mistook for a bump. I parked & flew. Didn't actually notice that the skis had snapped just in front of the toe until saw it flapping around. Brother broke (my) Dynastar Course in 1987).

Not generally easy things to break...

One of the funniest things I ever saw on a slope was a guy following one of his mate off the piste into some woods. His mate made it and so the guy decided to go through the piled up snow on the edge of the piste. Unfortunately for him it was frozen solid! He stopped dead and both his skiis snapped about 30 cm's in front of his boots and he just ended up standing there with both the broken bits flapping around at 90 degrees in front of him. His mates were rolling around in hysterics (and, to fair, so was he). Very very funny...no idea if he skiied down or not

I fell on a pair of hire skis and on getting up discovered that one was bent upwards from half way gently curling like a turkish slipper. Probably not very good quality hire skis as the next run on a new pair the binding broke in another fall.

I hadn't thought of gear damage - with my nice new shiny acquisitions I might check my policy next year to make sure damage to my gear as well as possible theft is covered.

avoid rock hopping-I smashed a shiny new pair of hire skis about 14 years ago in les Houches going down a closed piste. It was closed for a good reason. Nice at the top tho
