The Shuswap Indian Band ("Shuswap") have said today that they directly oppose any transfer of any Crown licenses, leases, permits, or tenures issued to Intrawest by the Crown with respect to the operation of Panorama Ski Resort, until such time as historic and ongoing damage to their and rights have been addressed. According to Chief, Paul Sam, "The Crown breached its duty to consult and accommodate the Shuswap Indian Band when the Crown initially granted licenses, permits, and approvals under a Master Development Agreement when they initially set up the Resort."
...Panorama lies within the traditional territory of the Shuswap Indian Band and has suffered significant impacts on the rights and title of the Shuswap, including significantly disrupting the Shuswap's preferred use of their traditional territory. Panorama is on land that is situated directly within and upon the trap-lines area of the Shuswap.
The Shuswap Indian Band is part of the Secwepemc (Shuswap) Nation of 17 bands that are located in the central interior of the Canadian Province of British Columbia. Its main Indian reserve (Quaaout) is on the shore of Little Shuswap Lake at Chase, British Columbia. It was created when the government of the then Colong of British Columbia established an Indian Reserve system in the 1860s.
