Temple Basin ski field, on the South Island in New Zealand, is closing before its season has even started because of a lack of snow. The decision came just as fresh snowfalls of up to a 50cm boosted some of the other South Island ski fields over the weekend. ...Temple Basin general manager, Gary MacPherson, said that the ski field could no longer afford to wait for the snow it needed to open. Temple Basin is the first casualty of one of the worst starts to the Canterbury ski season.
Bookings have been cancelled at several fields owing to the lack of snow, and some of the smaller fields have yet to open. Whakapapa and Manganui are also closed, while Mt Olympus and Mt Potts are on hold.
