Poster: A snowHead

In Feb. I slipped on ice in my ski boots and fell flat on my back. After a couple of weeks at home, I decided to visit our local (super duper) sports physiotherapist. He scanned my coccyx and said I had a small crack (3mm) in it. I do a lot of endurance horse riding ( doesn't seem to have affected the coccyx) but after 80km my legs have been aching, so I decided to do some gym work, mainly the cross trainer and stretches / lunges.
This, I think, has set off coccyx pain. I'm worried now - how do I get fit ? When will coccyx heal ? Can I ever go skiing again? The physio wants to inject cortisone in the coccyx (area?). Ideas?

erica2004, sorry to hear, coccyx injuries are no fun at all. I had a friend who fell off a horse jumping XC. Having gone to her local NHS hospital who x-rayed her, they advised her to go home and do exercises from a sheet they gave her. She subsequently got a second opinion from a private doctor who immediately got her to lie down and didn't let her get up for six weeks!
It took her about six months all told to heal up, and the doctor advised her not to ride for six months more (but you know how well that goes down with any rider!). I don't know how similar my friend's injury is to yours but the good news is she does still ride and ski (off piste and black runs included - on the skis, not the horse ).
Good luck with it all, here's hoping they can sort you out in time for Winter!

erica2004, My friend fell heavily on her coccyx a couple of weeks ago & has had great treatment from her physio. Its not fractured though, but she is in a lot of pain - & she's not one to make a fuss. He gave her ultrasound - ver yssothing & told her to sit on one of those neck rest things that you take on planes - not so cumbersome on a plane or car seat.
Personally I dont like the idea of cortisone injections & have refused them on both occasions I was offered them

A lady I worked with years ago came back from a skiing trip with a badly bruised coccyx, and her husband messed up both knees. Bet that put a dampener on things.
erica2004, hope it improves soon!

Hurtle, it's absolutely true too! She was a very posh young lady, working in the client's sales department in the City, who explained the catalogue of calamities to my tech team, at some length and full volume, on the way to/from the coffee machine. I believe she was utterly oblivious to the Life of Brian guards-style glancing, smirking and barely suppressed sniggering.

Erica,
I'm not medically qualified in anyway so I cannot comment from that perspective.
However, about 20 years ago I dislocated my coccyx when jumping into a canal from a high bridge. It appears that there's little that your (or your doctor) can do but wait. Sitting was sore for about 6 months, especially when sitting on a hard surface or getting into or out of a car seat. However after 6 months or so it seems to have sorted itself out and I don't really have any problems now.
More to the point, it doesn't appear in my top 20 list of reasons why I'm not a better skier!!

comprex, where do you insert that? I can imagine it would distract you from the pain!
I agree with what Skibb says. Rarely anything that can be done.Telling someone to lie down and not get up for 6 weeks (snowshine's friend) sounds like really bad advice, and a good way of losing muscle bulk and getting a DVT.

Take painkillers, keep active, buy a rubber ring to sit on.
I agree about the six weeks bed rest being very poor advice.

erica2004, brusied my coccyx badly during a fall on a concrete rail in March and had serious pain for about four weeks afterwards and loss of snsation in my toes for about 8 weeks. In the end the pain dulled and my feet came back to life but not without leaving me mentally thinking about the next time I'll do it.
I saw the doctor about a week after it happened and here answer was 'come back in three months, if it's still playing up then I'll take another look' - typical NHS.
However, I did get a course of double-strength ibuprofen that seemed to help when the pain was bad but it's just a case of riding it out until you either see a result or you strangle the doctor so much they refer you.
Buy a spine protetor if you're worried about skiing - they do work... unless you leave them in the chalet like I did. Big mistake!!

Masque, chrissake, how much MORE information concerning your anatomy below the waist are we to endure? That photo should come with a government health warning.

There's no point in being referred, the specialist is only going to tell you the same thing as your GP, surprisingly enough. That's if they don't return the referal for being inappropriate without even seeing you.

I cracked my coccyx falling down stairs on my bum when I was about 4 months pregnant. It hurt like hell for a long time, I couldn't take painkillers and couldn't sit down for ages. Oh, and the doctor stuck his finger up said bum to diagnose the problem since I couldn't have an xray. It healed just in time for me to give birth. Not nice.
