Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Innsbruck Area and it's Ski Buses

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi All,

I'm considering staying in Mieders (near Innsbruck) this March. I'd be interested to hear about peoples experiences with the ski bus service to other resorts. I know that there are buses from Innsbruck to most of the nearby resorts, but how about buses between say Mieders and Igls or Axamer Lizum? Will I have to change in Innsbruck? Does the system work well?

I'm hoping that there will be loads of easy skiing in the vicinity (nervous partner!). Is this the case?

Many thanks!

Liam

lrx28, I cant speak for Innsbruck but the ski busses here in Ski Amade are excellent. They are frequent and punctual. There are 2 busses from the end of the road going to the local piste and 2 other towns. If you want to go further then you change in the town - the connections are good.

It might be worth getting onto the local tourist info or the ski network and asking for the timetable.

lrx28, This is the site of the local bus service:
http://www.postbus.at/vip8/postbus/en/index.jsp

You can search if they have connection between certain villages.

Timetable for ski buses from Axamer Lizum to Innsbruck is here:

Two other routes from Axamer are linked at the bottom on the right side.

lrx28, When I was in Neustift this year there were regular buses from Innsbruck through Neustift to the Stubai Glacier.

Thanks All!

Very encouraging. Is it acceptable to stomp onto a postbus in ski shoes though?

You'll need to Register first of course.

lrx28, I think you will find a lot of specialised ski buses. Didn't see any postbuses in Neustift when I was there, it was all the blue ski buses. Very Happy

I was in Innsbruck last Christmas and found the ski busses to be pretty poor, actually. The schedule kerekip posted turned out to be a fantasy when I tried to use it. The first bus came at 9:00, not 8:00. And when I asked about the earlier bus at the rental shop in town, they told me no such bus has ever existed, and they laughed when I showed them the schedule I had printed out. And the driver got lost. And rather than taking us directly to Axamer Lizum, he drove around town for a while, picking up people until it looked like a bus in one of the Indian news reports with people hanging over the roof (while there was an empty bus right behind us). Then he took us to a parking lot 100 meters from where we had started out an hour earlier so that all of the people on our bus could get off and get on the bus to Stubai (the empty on behind us) and all of the people NOT on the empty bus behind us who wanted to go to Axamer Lizum could could transfer to our bus. It took about 45 minutes longer than the schedule indicated. A real pain in the ... . I would have thought they would be better organised.

lrx28, yes postbus is free if you have a ski pass - dont bother showing it though - if you clamber on carrying skis etc they assume you have a pass! Very Happy

I think you'll find this to be a more accurate reflection of the ski busses (although still somewhat open to interpretation in my experience). I also see no mention of Mieders.

I think you may be looking at a situation were you can easily get to Stubai and Schlick on the bus, but everywhere else (like Axamer Lizum) will be a major pain that will invlove somehow getting yourself into Innsbruck first. In fact, the easiest way might be to take the bus down the valley to Telfes or Fulpmes and then take the trolly to Mutters, which is connected via chairlift to Axamer Lizum assuming there is enough snow to ski it. Bottom line: you're looking at long transfers getting anywhere other than Stubai.

The area is nice, but I would never go there again without a car, having to rely on their bus system.
