Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skiing and Mountain Biking

 Poster: A snowHead

why don't I see more of you out here in the summer skiing in the morning and mountain biking in the afternoon?

Money, pure and simple. I work hard all year so we can get two or three weeks away in the mountains. That could be biking, that could be skiing.

When I'm not away in the mountains I have to do my sports from home. It might be grim up north but it certainly ain't white and snowcovered, so that more or less rules out skiing...

Time, Pure 'n simple.

I have about 20 days of holiday a year to blow. More than half goes on skiing already.

I can ride from home without breaking into any holiday time.

However, the kids are now on mountain bikes - so when they get bigger..........................

Time & money.

If I take time off in the summer, I don't get paid for it. If I don't get paid, I can't afford to go skiing.

If mountain biking and skiing go so well together (and I agree they do), then why don't I see more of you out here in the summer skiing in the morning and mountain biking in the afternoon? One liftpass would do all - same lifts, and you can do both in the same holiday. Sounds perfect to me, although I have to say that my sort of mountain biking is out on the tracks in Surrey or Scotland and not haring down black runs - nuts.

Why not? Puzzled

Cause we could do mountain biking near home! Very Happy -- especially the "out on the tracks in Surrey or Scotland and not haring down black runs" kind of mountain biking. wink

easiski,

I think the others have hit it on the head I used to mountain bike a few times in ski resorts back when I wasn't back into skiing so much but every day's holiday taken in summer is a day lost in winter.

Kramer, snap.

anyway - just as strawberries and leeks have their own seasons, so should skiing (IMHO). One of the joys of skiing is it being a winter sport. On the bike in the trees in summer, on the skis in the trees in winter.

I have never skied on a glacier but must admit I have thought about it this year. Mainly to practise drills and take lessons to hopefully improve my skiing during my winter holl. How does summer glacier skiing differ from winter?

Mogs, How long is a piece of string? The snow is different, the weather is different, the people are different. In summer you get at least 80% of the skiers on the mountain who are really good. In winter at least 80% are pretty poor - so you get to see how it should be done. It's such a pleasure to see all these good skiers every day + views are to die for + it's normally OK - good weather + fabulous wild flowers + marmottes + the alps are much prettier in summer - how much can I go on? Of course if "travelling" is your thing then you can't do that, but most things are cheaper - you can practise and learn so you don't have to spend so much of your winter hols doing that (at greater cost) .... It is a different thing.

However, my point was/is, that so many peeps are talking about mountain biking - and here we have serious moutain biking - why not combine? It almost never seems to happen. If I had 2 hobbies and could do them together in nice weather and beautiful surroundings I would (but I only have one).

stoatsbrother, then why are you hanging out on a ski forum in summer????? wink wink summer is for refining your skills - winter is for practising them. Very Happy

I would have to say easiski has a rather good point. In fact, I had thought of that myself. And if I were in UK, I'd probably do exactly what she suggested and have the best of "both" the alpine ski and mountain biking world.

Unfortunately, ticket from N. America to Europe sky rockets in the summer (like 3x). So, unless I really want to go to Europe for a SUMMER holiday, the "saving" in skiing would be far less than the increase in airfare.

It's not so much the distance/time. It's bloody EXPENSIVE to fly across the pond in the summer.

Winter, now that's a different story! Very Happy

I'd need at least an extra 2" of travel to consider riding in the Alps...ooooooooh sounds like an excuse for (another) new toy! Toofy Grin

I tend to take up most of my available holiday skiing (an that included PSB glacier skiing last year snowHead ). This year, it's left me with a long weekend over the Summer which would be taken up purely MTBing in Switzerland. If I had a week, I'd deffo consider skiing in the morning followed by riding in the afternoon...

Had to reply to this thread as I am currently going through a "career change", and am intending to do MTB Guiding qualifications this summer/autumn then next winter do ski instructor quals, hopefully this will mean I can go live amongst big mountains all year! I'm a mountain biker first and foremost, and an occasional(intermediate) skier. And in my mind skiing is almost identical to MTB'ing-it's the line down, the scenery, the sensation of speed, the adrenaline rush. snowHead

I wouldn't bike down some of the steeper slopes I have skied. I like the comfort of something relatively soft to fall on that also won't shred skin should I slide to a stop.

markymark73, Welcome to Snowheads. Sounds like you could have a really good career there. However, make sure that you work on your skiing to maximise your chance of passing your exams. You might need to decide where you want to work before setting out on the ski teacher ladder. If you're going to go to Canada, then you should do CSIA, but if you want to stay in Europe then BASI would be a better bet. Ditto if you go to Kiwi. Not all the exam levels are transferable, especially at the lower levels.

I'm with PisteHead, ski slopes look much scarier when there are no skis on your feet! Shocked Shocked

Whistler.

In north America, Whistler probably has the largest mtn bike guiding operation. -- because the upper mountain is not open for un-guided riding, so all clients has to go with a guide. That's a lot of guides!

Not to mention you get to try the super technical "North Shore" trail networks.

Yea, I think Whistler is the place to be for MTBing- it has a legendery rep. I'm more of an xc jeyboy though-non of that freeride business- I sh*t myself if my wheels are more than 30cm off the floor!lol. Wasn't aware of the guiding rule on the upper mountain though. That's useful to know.Thanks.

BC riding: it's unlike most other places in N. America.

Got my butt kick doing an "easy" trail! Shock Their definition of "easy" is, well, different! Wink

It's expensive for the client, unfortunatly. I recall being something in the neighbourhood of CAN$100/person a day to have the guide & lift (may include bike). And the mountain is quite big. A run from top to bottom can go on and on for an hour! I've never came down anything close to that steep ever before and probably would have poo-poo my pants if I weren't too busy/focus on hanging on for dear life! Embarassed And that was on an "intermediate" trail with a pitch the guide called "steep, but doable"! wink

That's why they REQUIRE everyone to go with a guide first. Or clients will be killing themselves too quickly for good business. Wink I think there's some part of the mountain you can go riding without a guide, AFTER passing the "evaluation" of the guide first.

In short, better to work there and get paid than to pay for all that if you're into it.

Hi all,
Am coming out to Les2Alpes next week with some mates for a few days on the glacier, is there a cheap (ish) hotel in town with a pool?
Also, can you hire mountain bikes in town for the afternoons?
Hope someone can help,
