Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Scientists say 'Iceman' (Oetzi) died from arrow

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Quote:
A prehistoric hunter known as Oetzi whose well-preserved body was found on a snow-covered mountain in the Alps died more than 5,000 years ago after being struck in the back by an arrow, scientists said in an article published Wednesday...
Even today, the chances of surviving such an injury long enough to receive hospital treatment are only 40 percent, according to the article.

Oetzi, also known as the Iceman, caused a sensation after his body was discovered by hikers in 1991 on a glacier 10,500 feet above sea level on the border between Austria and Italy.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

It's the most astounding story. It's worth getting the original edition of the book about it - 'The Man in the Ice' by Konrad Spindler - because the research has unfolded so much since the early studies.

Wikipedia has an interesting entry on it:

Note the number of 'facts' requiring citation. There's certainly some stuff in there that looks like myth.

Shot down by an airborne missile? What about the carbon footprint? I know th arrow itself was not fossil fuel powered, but what bout the energy expended in cranking the bow? Was animal slaughtered to provide energy for the assailant? Did the animal emit methane whilst it was growing up? If so there is a clear link between greenhouse gas production and the use of the arrow - and so it was a wicked act. We need to learn form history, and ban archery, to save the glaciers of the world.

PS I presume the link between greenhouse gasses (and hence the effect on glaciers, and hence skiing) and the arrow was the reason why this post was made in The Piste? Bit tenuous if I may say so.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

You're absolutely right. The poor man's corpse became entombed in snow which solidified into the glacier ...

It certainly wasn't a Piste, in the sense of being a marked or groomed ski route.

It'll make a great movie one day, especially if Oetzi had some interesting women in his life.
