Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Weather

I remeber on the forum at the other place there was a long-running topic about weather. The consenus was that www.snow-forecast.com was pretty useless. I've always used the French service www.netteo.fr which I've found to be fairly accurate, certainly for the Haute Tarentaise valley. I've just found, thanks to www.pistehors.com access to the US Army's European Theatre weather maps, they look great. The really good news is there looks to be a nice big weather front building over the next 72 hours so anyone skiing in the Alps next week should have some fresh white stuff. Sorry but I'm useless at pasting links. snowHead

Fruity, here's the link http://131.54.120.150/wxcharts/wxcharts.htm, unfortunately it looks to me that most of the percipitation is going to be over the northern Alps.

Just hope that Meteo.FR is wrong. I'm off the Chamonix tomorrow and Meteo.FR suggests rain below 2400m Sad All the other forecasts predict snow. Better keep everything crossed me thinks!

Mark, it's looking fantastic, there's already 280 cms of snow at the Fort (Col de Traversette) and 125 cms in the village, Spoke to my daughter last night and she said it had been snowing off and on all day. The weather has been really odd this year a couple of weeks ago they had temperatures of 15-20 degrees so some snow has melted and they were a few bare patches. We give you the whole truth here! The forecast for next week is terrific, go to the link I posted earlier which shows exactly where the snow is predicted to fall. Doesn't always happen to plan but because La Rosiere is so close to Mont Blanc we have our own little micro-climate and often get snow when other resorts don't. One down side is that it's often colder in Italy and the link to La Thuile is closed because of high winds.

I'd agree with that, except that mountain weather is notoriously fickle, and over the last few days here in the Tarentaise if you'd been visiting the meteo.fr site you'd have seen their forecasts change almost by the hour! But ok they do usually get the major trends right.

Talking about pistehors.com there are reports of two fatal avalanches yesterday, one in La Rosiere. Be careful!

That's another site that should be on the snow awards list.

Heard it on the radio yesterday (La Rosière), just goes to show, hardly any snow for ten days or so, but incredible winds (started last Thursday morning). Up until a couple of days ago avalanche risk was down at the minimum in most of the Tarentaise, up to 3/4 yesterday when the high winds combined with rising temperatures to create dangerous conditions.

Whilst on the subject of weather, in Tignes last Thursday morning when the wind picked up, the chill factor was amazing, never been so cold.

Melanie Kerslake posted on here from Serre Chevalier last night, it was snowing all day yesterday, about a foot of new snow, and more expected.

I left Meribel yesterday morning and it was snowing there. Just 10 minutes down the valley the sun was out and water running down the road. It was also very windy. I suspect there is a very unstable system prevailing at present.

Heard that loads of tour busses have been stuck on the mountain roads yesterday due to freezing rain.

Came back from Alpe D'Huez yesterday, chaos at Grenoble airport due to buses not getting out of resorts. We were lucky. However when we left the snow was turning to rain. Also the pistes had turned brown /orange due to a front coming up from Africa and depositing sand. Most of the lifts were closed all saturday morning I don't know if any opened in the afternoon. But we were O.K. had a fantastic weeks skiing but with conditions like that yesterday we were nearly glad to be going home.
