Poster: A snowHead

Reports last winter giving the impression of record breaking snowfall in North America and a snowless Alps do not appear to have been reflected in results published by the ski nations of Europe and North America in the aftermath of winter 2006-7. Whilst results in Europe are better than expected in most cases, the US National Ski Areas Association reported last week that preliminary figures indicated an average 6.9 percent drop in visitor numbers to the nation's ski resorts. This is down both on last season and on the ten year average figure and compares to average declines of nearer 5% published by France and Switzerland.... The reports of huge snowfalls in Colorado throughout the winter appear to have given the impression that this was the norm across the US. In fact snowfall was well below average for much of the season in most other US ski regions, particularly California and New England. Unlike in Europe, cold weather and heavy snow through April helped East Coast resorts recover some of their losses, but business on the Pacific coast was down more than 16%. Colorado will release its results next month but they are expected to be up, against the overall trend, although the heavy snowfall here did actually cause some practical difficulties including airport and key road closures.

Probably shouldn't print this, but we're only down 6% on last winter, which was 11%up on our best winter previously. So we did just fine.
