Drought fears in China prompted the production of snowfall in Tibet this week. Reportedly, about 1cm of snow collected on the ground. The experiment took place on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, which is the world's highest plateau at about 4,500 metres above sea level. It is also the source of the Yangtze river. The snow was created by seeding clouds with silver iodide, a chemical with a cooling effect. ...Chinese scientists have warned that rising temperatures on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau will melt glaciers, dry up major Chinese rivers and trigger drought, sandstorms and desertification.
China is already the world's largest practitioner of rain-seeding, a controversial procedure that involves releasing silver iodide as a catalyst into clouds either by aircraft or by firing cannon shells into them.

Cloud seeding has been in use since 1946. In Wyoming they started an $8.8 million project to test whether cloud seeding can increase snow packs in the Medicine Bow, Sierra Madre, and Wind River ranges. Cloud seeding occurs in Israel, China, the US, Thailand, France, and in Australia. Ski areas in Colorado are said to use cloud seeding to increase snow fall by an estimated 10%. In Tasmanai they have been using it since 1964 to make more rain, but sometimes they are too 'good', making life much wetter than nature intended.
A local mayor complained in this article the impact of cloud seeding was far more severe, causing rain that deterred tourists and ruined barbecues and sports events. "You can tell the difference between normal rain and cloud-seeding - you hear the plane go overhead and you get very torrential, unusual downpours,".

Wasn't there a suggestion that "secret" British cloud seeding in the 1950's led to a flood in the 50's resulted in 30+ deaths? Seem to recall reading that somewhere.
