 Poster: A snowHead
|
Every year I try to to rent a top of the range ski for the day to see whats out there now.
In recent years I have been unimpressed with what I have taken. Salomon X scream and Pilot, for example.
The last test ski I really liked was the Axendo Series.
What I generally look for is an all mountain ski that has good grip on hard pack and good short radius turns.
I have also looked for skis like the Pocket Rocket on powder days but they are always out when I need them.
The Volkl 5 star is on my list for next year.
Any others I should consider ?

Could I ask why Salomon?
Try the Rossi B2 or the K2 Omni 5.5

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Salomon - because I always used to like their stuff since the Superforce.
I never got on with Rossignol because I ended up with heavy GS style skis on the recommendation of the shops. I had my eye on Tomba type slalom skis. B2 gets good reviews, so it may be time to try them.
K2 has also been fine in the past.

Dynastar, the Intuitiv series, the 71 and 74, great all-mountain skis.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

First thing I should make clear is: I love the Pocket Rockets.
Their flex makes them fun on the bumps, their width makes light of otherwise horrid aging off piste and if u have the responsibility of escorting slower skiers around the pistes, their twin tips make it the perfect opportunity to play at going backwards and roundyroundyround etc.
They are great for short radius turns (the 175's have a carve radius of 18m, the 165's 15 or 16) the only thing they're not really good for is bombing around at v.high speeds: their xtra width makes them clatter against each other a bit (unless u ski nuskool-style, feet apart) and the downside of the manoeuvrability produced by their flex and tight sidecut is a little instability at high speeds.
Even this, though, I find advantageous in that I get the full exhilaration of going fast before I reach speeds that are actually break-neck-dangerous
I suggest, if u suspect new snow to be coming, get them out b4 it does, have a laugh on them and if the new snow does come you're the one on the phat-skis!!

BTW. Last yr the Scream Pilots came in 3 different models. Normal, Hot and xtra hot (I think) they did actually ski quite differently from each other.
I cannot recommend highly enough the value in skiing a few sets of similar skis in quick succession. I did a session with a friend in Val-T where we took out 6 models between us over the course of a day (no! models of ski!!! ).
A big advantage we had was that our boots took the exact same binding size so we were A/Bing on consecutive runs!
Oddly enough, that day taught me as much about my own skiing as it did the skis I rode.
