A far simpler regime is that adopted by Britain's greatest athlete Alf Tupper, 'the tough of the track'.
No specialist training required, just hard work - lifting, welding etc.
Diet:- Fish and chips, wrapped in newspaper.
If Alf had taken up skiing, he would have showed those toffs in the Ski Club of Great Britain a thing or two. He would have probably come back from the Winter Olympics with an armful of gold medals too !

Guvnor, I do not recall him but he might have been this kid - Joe Bones the human fly

As for 'British military' there was also a big soldier, a gentle giant type who the Germans always managed to wind up in every weekly episode, with the consequence that he knocked them all out and won the day.
There was always a true Second World War tale every week as well, how someone won a VC or suchlike - and the Germans wonder why the Second World War is still fresh in popular culture.

Latchigo, That's the fella....ahhh, memories.....and not only Victor, what about the 'Commando' series of comics, those small booklets, cost about 5p from what I remember.....had hundreds of those too....probably worth a few quid on ebay now, but alas they fell foul of an over enthusiastic cleaning spree by my Mother

Hi chaps
Good to see that someone has linked to my Alf Tupper website.
It would be great if some of you could contribute to the new page..."How I met Alf Tupper"
A page( or two ), a paragraph or a sentence even, outlining how you first encountered the great man - mostly it seems from elder brothers comics - or simply do what others have done & create a fictional meeting with him !
Send contributions to shawfields_uk@yahoo.co.uk
Cheers
Alf

shawfield, I am at home working and resting a broken leg. I was listening to Robert Elms on Radio London.
Elms does lots of London trivia - favourite bus routes etc. He raised the question of whether Alf Tupper was a Londoner. It gradually dawned on Elms that, despite Alf running at White City on a regular basis, the cobbled streets of Alf's fictional home suggested he was more likely to be from somewhere Up North.
It reminded me of those old 'Victor' comics. Of course 'Victor' was your bread and butter kids comic for older kids. Glossy Superman comics were a serious amount of money in comparison.

Yes, I'd heard that Elms was talking about that.
I might send him an excerpt from the mini interview I did with the old editor of the Victor, who said that it was never stated where Alf came from. It allowed readers imaginations to make the associations that made most sense for them.
Cheers

In my loft I have got every Victor Annual from 1962 to 1978 (from memory).
Also a box with every Victor comic between 1969 and 1976 (again from memory).
My son is now 16, but they came out of the loft when he was about 10 and wereput back there a couple of years later.
It was a real treat for me when he was readingthem...there was always a few on the loo for research purposes!!
I gues I could get a few quid on ebay...but they will give so much more pleasure when one day I can (hopefully) introduce my grandsons to Alf and his friends.

It might be time for the tale of when Dave Goldsmith met Alf Tupper on Hampstead Heath, during the heavy snowfalls of 1963. Running events had been severely disrupted, so Alf had knocked up some wooden skis in the workshop. It all took off from there...
