Poster: A snowHead

I think that my brother in law is a bit of a muppet - here's why...
We are driving to Chamonix on Good Friday, I told him about the expected snow and mentioned snow chains. He said that he'd done the route several times and has never bothered with chains, that there was never any snow to speak of on the roads around Cham/Argentiere.
Is he mad, or am I? I thought it was a requirement to have chains with you...

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

At that time of year in Chamonix (lowish) you would be unlucky to need chains. However if you are driving up to Argentiere or La Tour after a dump then you'll regret not having them . In fact I doubt the cops will let you.
Personally I would not risk it, with the way the weather is at the moment though. Where are you driving from? UK or airport?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Diarmuid, Driving from the UK, actually we are staying in Argentiere, would that make a difference to your advice?

Not really. I would still advise you to have them. If you want to save a few quid, buy them on the way in one of the big French supermarkets like Casino/Geant/Carrefour. Depending on the size of your car, they won't cost a lot and you will have a better idea of the weather forecast.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

definitely worth having them, i was in Chamonix 3rd weekend in April a couple of years ago and it dumped 40cm or so in town overnight...abandoned cars all over the place on the way up argentiere/ le tour, not what you want on an april powder day.

Diarmuid, Sounds like a plan, drive a Renault Laguna, so should be easy to get them to fit - I guess they'll be open on Good Friday??
Beakyshark, Very true! Here's hoping for the same.

IMT, in previous years everything closed on Good Friday. France is still a "Catholic" country. If shops open, they may well close in the afternoon.
