Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Adjusting Salomon bindings myself

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have bought a pair of new Salomon Streetracer 10s off Ebay. The bindings (the ones which are sold with these skis) have been put on for my boot size, but I want to doublecheck that I am adjusting the bindings correctly.
1. Move the front part forwards/back to correspond to the markings for my boot size.
2. Move the back part so that my boots click in correctly.
3. Dial in the correct DIN setting.

Two other points:
- I can remember my DIN setting from when I have had hire skis, but is there an online calculator I can use to doublecheck.
- There is a screw on top of the front binding which requires a star bit to turn. I assume I leave that alone.
Many thanks.

penster, ask Salomon for a copy of their technical manual (or any other printed manual they are prepared to give you) - it'll be interesting to see what response you get.

If the bindings were sold you by a Salomon dealer and adjusted by a Salomon certified technician they will probably argue that you don't need the info.

In my view consumers should be treated as intelligent people, capable of understanding and adjusting bindings at their own risk, with manufacturer's guidance. People adjust and fix bike components themselves.

Traditionally, the rather high-handed attitude of the ski industry is "don't touch that stuff, leave it to the experts". A shame.

Another point on this: despite decades of claimed advances in the safety and sophistication of ski bindings, how many ski shops in the UK have binding testing machines? (the only way it can be reliably determined if they are working at the indicated DIN settings).

The last time I checked, fewer than 5% of shops selling ski bindings in Britain had these machines. In fact, unless things have changed, I think the figure is way below 5%.

David Goldsmith, www.filarinskis.co.uk Has it's own test machine AND makes you sign T+C's if they use it!
