Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

thigh deep powder

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
OK, so it doesn't happen very often, but today I've been (attempting to) ski in thigh-deep powder. The technique seemed to be to lean back to keep the ski tips up - otherwise they just ploughed in and stopped dead - but to simultaneously put weight forward and arms out front with the elbows tucked in whilst pole-ing. Sounds good in theory except my thighs were on fire and I had to stop every two turns. By the time I'd got to the bottom everything was tracked up by all the decent skiers. If I ever get the chance again....what should I be doing!?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Not stopping.

If you do stop, step up on your uphill ski just a little bit then turn downhill. The second turn has to start at a decent speed down the hill but everything you do has to happen s l o w l y and never stop, like you have the Blue Danube or Tales from the Vienna Woods on your iPod.

Mountainbug,
If its thigh deep untracked you will have to point the skis pretty well straight down the fall-line or you will not move and you can't or shouldn't need to turn much out of the fall-line. More speed than you may think is your friend here. You'll need the energy and impetus out of the last turn to help start the next so get a rythmn and bounce going. If your weight is right the skis will rise up and make the repoint, rather than a turn, of the skis a bit easier. Make as many of these linked efforts as possible. Easier said than done if your thighs are burning and I suffered from this last time out. If for some reason your legs are taking a pounding, be careful not to burn them out on the one day as you will be in deficit for the rest of the week.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'll leave it to Easiski...but my 2c worth is don't lean back! No wonder you had thigh burn. Need for speed, and F-A-T skis can never be too FAT in thigh deep snow.
If you havn't got them...rent them!
FAT=100mm under foot as a minimum!

Weight central, skis together, strong in the core and a bit of speed. Oh and 190cm Volkl Gotamas. This works because I have been doing it in waist deep snow all morning. Had to stop at 2pm though as I was utterly battered. Got some great video though. More face shots than a German porn film Very Happy
