Latchigo, rotten shitty luck. Sounds better than blowing an ACL as far as the future goes anyway. Glad it wasn't the first day too.

fragglerock, I never got to see my second video either. My first free skiing video was a hard act to follow - though my bracage was crap; so I reckon I might have been disappointed.
Did you do the 'Star Wars' couloir they were talking about on Thursday ?

Latchigo, no I think we were all pretty much on an off day on Friday so Phil wisely decided to keep away from rocks etc... I guess the mogles were soft enough...
It would be really great if warren could get the tech together to let us download our own vids. HE may have a memory which means he can remember every run of everyone he has ever coached, but I could barely remember my Monday run by Thursday!

Kitenski Thanks for the pic - makes me want to cancel the current trip, never mind not book another

Ski binding did not release when I fell head over heels. I was on a Warren Smith course and it was just starting to get more interesting after the exercises on the first section ...
...Warren Smith looked at the binding and my boot and they could not see a fault - though they are not Rossignol specialists. |
Properly made, properly maintained and properly adjusted ski bindings have protected legs from fracture for over 30 years. This is proven by the huge fall in the frequency of leg fractures over that period.
I'd get those bindings tested with the boots you used, on an electronic or mechanical testing machine. Assuming you were using the bindings at the recommended DIN settings they could normally have been expected to have released with a safe margin. The failure of the binding to release could be indicative of the DIN indicator not correctly showing the actual release threshold (which is measured in nM - Newton metres - the 'unit of moment' that determines at what level the binding releases). Alternatively, the DIN may have been too high (though I imagine that you checked this with Warren Smith). The heel unit may have been too close to the toe unit (which can jam the boot in the system too tightly). Or there could be some internal mechanical fault in the heel unit.
Only a mechanical or electronic test can do the diagnosis properly.
Wishing you a very successful recovery, Latchigo. That's a really nasty thing to happen. There but for the grace of God ...

Latchigo, I can feel your pain mate as I am in a similar situation, not quite as bad, no breaks for me fortunately, but my injury has prevented me from doing my BASI instructors course. A couple of days before the course I go and blow out my knee, ACL and MCL strain, whilst exercising. Gutted is not the word. Get well soon mate.

I have started fantasising about the up-coming season, however I still get some twinges from my ankle... just wondering how you were getting on now? Going to get out on the slopes this year?

fragglerock, Hello. I have been walking around without crutchs for some time now. I am still aware of the injury especially if I run for a bus.
I hope to ski but I have never skied before the New Year anyway, so I am looking for further improvement.
I suppose I should do more exercise, swim etc. but I have not got round to that yet. I have not even played golf this year and I could easily spare the time to do the 9 holes at the end of my road.
Strangely enough, I was thinking about Warren Smith and dry slopes. I never used dry slopes while I was learning but used quite a few later on when some of our lot were neophytes still getting to grips with the basics. They were great for socialising but I was not learning anything new - just whizzing up and down killing time till we all went off for a meal/drink. It struck me that if you were concentrating on bracage a dry slope is all you would need.
Will you be doing another course with Warren ? I am minded to do something more cruisy first - Flims/ Laax maybe in a nice hotel. In time, I would also like to give Snoworks a go.

Latchigo, good to hear the recovery is going well. Yes, why not try a bit of dry slope? It will at least give you an idea of where you are...

Latchigo, Glad you are up and about again. As I told you earlier I also broke my leg in Jan. ended up having a plate with 7 screws put in it. (its staying in unless it plays up in the future , then they will take it out)
Had the O.K. do do what I want again in July. since then I have been.....White water rafting, canyoning, hiking (a lot) , cycling , swimming, water skiing, and looking forward to skiing again. and as I'v said before I'm in my 60s , so look on the bright side and I'm sure you will be skiing again this winter.

Byron Gates, You seem to be doing an awful lot. My excuse is that I am three months later than you.
My weekends exercise was drinking at the Lancashire beer festival in Putney and some shopping.
I have a CD of my 'nail' x ray. Where the screws go in it looks untidy. I thought they would chamfer it off, so that it looked neat. The doctors tell me it is supposed to look like that and is not untidyness on their part. I think mine is supposed to stay in place and the bone grows around it.
TallTone, You are probably right. I have never tried Sandown Park, my nearest slope which has a bend in it. I have never done the nine holes in the middle of the race track either.
