Broken lower right leg on the penultimate afternoon in Verbier.
Ski binding did not release when I fell head over heels. I was on a Warren Smith course and it was just starting to get more interesting after the exercises on the first section.
I am in a full cast with two fractures .
No EOSB for me this year. Just as well I had not booked anything.
I am always wary of booking another ski holiday before I return from the next one. I once broke my shoulder in Megeve and had a fortnight in Tignes booked for the end of April. Mind you, I still went to Tignes. I just skied very carefully.
Three seats and three cheers for Easyjet !
They are the ones I flew back with. Flybe out of Sion could not cope. BA apparently will not take anyone in a full cast. Shame on the national carrier !

What a shame. Why do you think binding did not release?
Take care

Warren Smith looked at the binding and my boot and they could not see a fault - though they are not Rossignol specialists.
I suppose it is just one of those things. What puzzles me is why the leg would break INSIDE the ski boot which was done up at the time.

Frosty the Snowman, Strangely enough, it did not hurt that much. I knew there was something wrong because I felt it go. The leg was wobbling about like a rag doll.
I slid down the slope with my left foot leading. I kept the boot on until we got to the clinic.
Remarkably there was no pain taking the boot off. My salopettes which have a gaiter did not need to be cut off either. You always hope it is bad bruising but the x rays told a different story.
TallTone, I am sure there will be other Snowheads events to look forward to next year.

Bummer....but how was the course?!
If you went to the Medical Centre just up the hill towards the church it may be of some consolation to know that you will have got top quality care as they apparently see more broken limbs and knee injuries there than any other medical practice in Europe.
They know what they are doing!
Heal well...
On a personal note I do fel that the injury incident clock is ticking....one day it will be my turn I guess.

I can see how a leg can break inside a boot - just by twisting it. Ouch!

You know it makes sense.

rungsp, It was the medical centre by the Migros supermarket.
Three women were working on the cast. One moved my wedding tackle to one side and said 'That is for you' !
After the cast set, one sawed through it while another gave me an injection in the stomach. One of the nurses had herself previously suffered exactly the same breakage as me.
At the end, the Dr. Contat came in to inspect their work and gave it his stamp of approval.
Sage, Apparently the bindings were set right. Warren Smith could not see a fault anyway. I was attempting a 'bracage' (spelling ?) turn. You plant the pole. Lean your hips down the mountain, without bending at the waist, flatten your skis and pivot round the pole - as opposed to stemming out with the uphill ski. Anyone who has ever been on a Warren Smith course will have had 'bracage' drummed into them. Allegedly the turn was one of my best - but I picked speed and took a tumble head over heels on heavy snow.

Latchigo, firstly get well soon. About the broken lower leg I'll guess and say the fall made your body and leg 'want to' move or twist one way but the ski dug into the snow so preventing the attached leg from moving with the rest of your body so something had to 'give' .ouch.

Bad luck....my leg was also broken inside the boot. I did it sliding like you (not the fall) Also didnt hurt , until the plaster came off 6 weeks later , now it 's aching like hell and I'v got a limp.
Hope you get well soon .

Byron Gates, Thanks. That has really cheered me up !
At least it confirms my prejudices about what life may be like for those who retire to 'difficult' terrain.
I had a day and a half hobbling around and fearful of falling - just like an old one with a bockety leg !

Latchigo, unlucky
Sounds a little like the usual slow speed injury, that braquage (sp?) stuff is done at low speed.
Hope the recovery is quick.

PisteHead, The ski did come off but to late, Sliding on your back down the slope with your skis in front of you, when one ski digs in it flips you over and thats when the break happens. (inside the boot)

Latchigo, unlucky, hope you get better soon. I was out there last week, where were you when you fell, what piste?

rayscoops, Somewhere above Ruinettes, so not too bad. I still do not know the names of any of the pistes, they are not well advertised.
The previous day the Ski Club went down Tortin bumps. I took the lift down. Imagine getting taken off there. It would require a helicopter I reckon.

Latchigo, it does, I was with a friend there once. She was traversing and just sat down and said "My knee just popped"
She couldn't stand up it turned out her ACL was ruptured. It was very strange, she hadn't had a fall, the sitting down was because of the the ACL not the cause.
Heli arrived...off she went.

Latchigo, I did those bumps that lead to Tortin, it was carnage there, people falling all over the place. Big que at the drop off point as people plucked up the courage to start the run. Good fun though on my board, even though it is not very flexible/bendy for that type of run.
Funny how people get injuries on the easier runs (my mate nearly broke his shoulder on the flatest bit of piste as a newbie boarder) put your feet up and enjoy yourself as best you can

Byron Gates, It definately sounds like a ski will not break away in time when the force is applied from certain angles. Gives me something to think about when skiing.

Sounds like it was a bit more "breakage" than "bracage".
I hope that you heal quickly and are able to rehab well so that you are ready for next season.

Sorry to hear of this. I tore my gastrocnemius on the same piste on Warren's course in January. I think that my bindings were set too high. I hope it heals soon.

Latchigo, What very bad luck. I do hope you make an excellent recovery and can start to think about skiing next winter. For your interest I was skiing with a girlfriend last week who is a very experienced skier but who has had surgery to both knees. She requested a lower DIN setting than the computer recommended and only after a lot of insistence did the technician agree and she had to sign a waiver (in Austria). She did not lose a ski all week.

Sharkymark, I have leaned a lot through threads like this. I now pap my pants if at any time during the day a gap big enough for a beer mat appears under my planks. I feel very sorry for Latchigo, as he has the right attitude for someone advancing in years when not confident of a certain situation; getting the lift down instead of tackling the black bumps piste.

Latchigo, I never talked to you, but I was the guy who dropped down to your class after bruising my ankle on Tuesday... a bad week for in-boot injuries.
Looks like I managed to split some ligaments... experts to be seen soonish!
The course was great, all you missed on Friday was MORE bumps and braquage. Also scary turns in a pseudo couleur.
Hope you get back up and on em soon!
