 Poster: A snowHead

Anybody got any experience with good ski orientated GPS systems. Getting a present for someone and wondering if anyone could recommend a good one...?

What do you want it to do? I've got one that shows things like speed, altitude, distance covered, vertical distance covered, and so on. Navman X300 or summat.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

That sounds like the kind of thing, but are any systems set up with resort information (ie as part of the associated software - sorry bit clueless)?? We have just been to Tignes and they had systems there that were specific to Espace Killy so in our results we could see what runs, lifts etc we had been on and the results were presented in a map format as well as giving the other info hyweljenkins mentions...?

bullet, I was in Tignes earlier this year and know what you are speaking about. All that system does (sorry, can't remember its name) is to track where you go during the day using a pretty much bog standard handheld GPS unit. When you return it to the rental company they take the series of points making up your track and overlay this onto a topographical map, plus generate some statistics such as distance travelled, total ascent and descent etc.
As far as I'm aware there isn't anything available that comes loaded up with general ski resort info.
Like hyweljenkins I also have a Navman X300 - useful little gadget to answer questions like how fast? how far today? how high? and so on. One thing it doesn't have though is a data port, so no way of downloading its contents to a PC as you can do with dive computers and most general purpose GPS units.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

No - there's no resort information in mine - it's just a small display that records information.

You'll need to Register first of course.

I also have one fo the Navmen and was accused of it being a "boy's toy" before departure.
What quickly became evident was that the accusers soon wanted to know how far how fast etc.

You can buy many gps units (handhelds, watches) where the gps plots can be downloaded onto pc and plotted on to google earth.
Check this link http://www.waynos.co.uk/adhoc/images/Val02Small.jpg to see an example
i particularly like the Suunto X9i, a bit pricey for me though!
