Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Heart Rate Monitors: Polar F11 or Suunto X3HR

Poster: A snowHead
I need a new HRM, mainly for running and biking, maybe swimming. I only need the very basic functions of heart rate and time elapsed and a clean display, but I like a good looking watch and hate the cheap look of most HRMs. I also do not want to spend too much...the 2 watches seem to fit my requirements though I have not seen them "in the flesh".

I used to have the old style Polar chest strap which I did not like very much....I hear the new WearLink is very comfortable.

The Suunto has the altimeter function which would be nice for skiing.

Any feedback on these two watches would be highly appreciated.
Cheers.

Try posting on the Runners World `Gear` forum (http://www.runnersworld.co.uk). Would have thought you were likely to get quite a few responses there.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Mine is Timex, can't remember which model but it's cheaper than the Polar equivalent.

I'd think about what you want to do with your monitor and the data it produces. I have a suunto and my wife has a timex. If you want to store the data on computer and analyse fitness and /or route taken I'd recommend the timex. Maybe getting a model with gps would end up being used more or would provide more data than a cheaper version. The timex range seems to be modular so you could add a data recorder and a gps module later if you felt the need. I think suunto's resting a bit on its laurels

snowman, I have been delighted with my Polar M91ti - as much because I think it's an attractive watch as it's functioning. I think the Suunto's are overpriced...although they did answer my question as to when they'd produce a heart rate monitoring ski watch, sadly with a "not planned".

Be aware that the altimeter is only really useful as a navigation aid, (or barometer) not as a how fast and far I've skied aid (AFAIK).

Suunto`s are good, serious kit but very expensive.
Polar HRs are excellent - tends to be the favourite of many runners. They don`t have altimeters.
Timex hrs are also good - again - no alti.s.
I have/have had a number of Polar and Timex monitors - not much too chose between them although received wisdom is that Polar have the edge.
Nike also make decent HRMs - much better looking in my opinion but it`s all a matter of taste.
If you wanted to spend more money - you could look @ something like the Garmin 305. This has HR functions, distance monitor and altimeter. Can download everything onto your computer and create pretty graphs/overlay Google earth etc. Prices vary - prob @ £270 but might be able to get a cheaper from Joe Jogger or E bay. Worth shopping around. Should just say that the Garmin is GPS based system.

Meant to add that the altimeter in the 305 when it first came out was slated. New software patches are supposed to have fixed the problem. Don`t know whether this is the case - check the Runnersword gear forum.
