Depends how you define a resort, but the ski areas in the Vosges are probably the closest - about 5-6 hours.

I think you're wrong. Hasn't been snow since 27/2, but some of the resorts are open, and skiers will be heading down there tomorrow (I'll be turning off the main road about 15km outside Strasbourg to go to the airport as they head on down the A35 to Colmar, then up into the hills)

wozzie,
If you are wanting alpine resorts the Haute Savoie ones are the easiest to get to. (Portes de Soleil, Grand Massif, Mont Blanc area, Espace Diamant, Bonnard/ La Clusaz etc) Don't know which is the quickest but shouldnt think there is a lot of difference. If the snow is better in the Savoie it is only an hour or two further.

wozzie,
Wozzie - just to clarify a few things that people have said already above.
Boxing day - not an advisable time to travel as this is a Wednesday - most operators use Sat to Sat (some Sun to Sun) - in non-peak some offer some flexibility but I would dobt it here as this cuts across the Xmas and the new year weeks. Not sure of your budget etc but one alternative would be trying one of the larger twon (rather than village) based skiing - Chamonix is an obvious possibility. I persoanlly satyed in a youth hostel for 4 days from boxing day 2000 - can't remember the name - was very cheap but very cramped sharing with 32 europeans.
your other question is about the driving distances - as already mentioned, probably the easiest to reach are those close to geneva. am not too knowledgeable about the swiss resorts here, but the closest french are
Grand Massif - Flaine/Les Carroz/Samoens/Morrillon
Portes du Soleil - Morzine/Les Gets/Avoriaz
La Clusaz/La Grand Bornand
Chamonix
Megeve
Perhaps another 2 hours drive for Val D'isere, Tignes, Meribel, Courchevel Les Arcs, La Rosiere, La Plagne. Not sure on the driving time to the Southern Alps.

The following were calculated using satnav, and do not take into account fuel or rest stops. These would add at least 1 hour to these times. Approx distance and (very) optimistic timings are:-
Flaine: 7hr 35 54 miles
Morzine: 7 hrs 44 545 miles
Chamonix: 7hrs 39 554 miles
Megeve: 7hrs 40 546 miles
3V's (Courchevel): 8hrs 24 595 miles
Les Deux Alpes: 8 hrs 25 577 miles
Not really a great deal of difference in them all, take your pick.
Re the Vosges area, much closer. The main resort is La Bresse: 5 hrs46 and 367 miles
At present (5th March) more than half the runs are closed. Very low resort 900m, temps at present 5c. IMHO, not really a start of the season resort to go to for reliable snow.
Hope you get sorted for Dec 26th.
