Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Great scoop, Dr. Che!

Here's something posted by Eurosport in the past few minutes.

Eberharter's non-appearance at a recent training camp in New Zealand may have been the straw in the wind, though he didn't miss a lot. The exercise was heavily affected by big snowstorms and avalanche threats.

Well, we can look back upon the career of a great ski racer who proved the test of time in terms of performance and longevity. I even remember his performances at the 1991 World Champs at Saalbach-Hinterglemn when the great Giradelli was at the peak of his powers!

Yep, but what is impressive of the Austrian team is no matter who quits, there's always someone ready to follow the retiree steps and shine for a number of years.
Or maybe that's part of the problem...lucky them that can afford to let one champion go without qualms...
When Maier was absent, Eberharter took the lead and won the WC...this past year that he was not so tuned up, Maier took the lead again...hadn't it been him, it would have been someone else!
After all Girardelli was/is Austrian...and deemed not such a greatskier, that's why the austrian fed let him go. The better for him, maybe in a competitive team as the Austrian one he wouldn't have shine as he did as a one man team.

Er, Giradelli was arguably the best skier of his generation-he even won back to back downhills on the Lauberhorn and the Streif in 1989. Not bad for a slalom/GS specialist. Before he crashed out of the 1991 slalom at the world champs in Saalbach, he was nearly 2 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. Quite simply, he left the Austrian team in the mid 80's due to an argument. He was unquestionably their best skier. During the mid 80's the Austrian team was in a state of transition, still holding on to the old guard of Resch, Hoefflener, Stock et al. Giradelli was the bright light of that team till he left. The result was five years of the Austrians getting hammered by the Swiss (Mueller, Zurbriggen, Schneider, Walliser, Figini, etc).

Girardelli left the Austrian team at a pretty young age, in (I think) 1979 or 1980. and it was indeed due to an argument between his father/coach and the Austrian ski federation. He was unable to compete at the 80 or 84 Winter Olympics because he was not yet a Luxembourg citizen.

If Stefan Eberharter's reading this I hope he has a very happy and enjoyable 2nd career. He deserves it for the pleasure he's given so many of us over the years. Very Happy
