Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Christmas at Wengen

Hi everyone. We are going as a family to wengen over Christmas for the first time. (At Christmas, not to Wengen). What can I expect the conditions to be like. Should I expect good skiing, or resign myself to a family christmas without snow???

Any experiences gratefully received. We are staying at the Alpenrose for the umpteenth time - my favourite hotel!!!

Brian T, welcome to snowHeads snowHead

I'm sure DG Orf will give a far more comprehensive answer than I, as I have never been over Christmas (have done New Year twice) However, I regularly go the first week of Jan and have had mixed conditions. There has always been enough snow, but on several occasions only just. Skiing back to Wengen has usually been possible, but several years not. The years I went over New Year both both good (about 8 yrs ago??) but very busy. I was staying in Lauterbrunnen and getting on a train was a challenge. The repositioning since then of the Manlichen cable car should have improved things, but expect to queue for lifts (never heard of in Jan!!)

Wengen is not a snow-guaranteed resort in the early season, but which resorts without glaciers are these days?

From casual monitoring of snow reports over the past couple of decades I'd hazard a guess of a 70% chance of skiing to Wengen village at Christmas.

But what a great place to be at Christmas! You could always go for brilliant hikes if the snow is limited, so maybe take some non-ski boots.

Brian T, Little Angel Wengen will usually be fairly cold arround Christmas snow can be either brilliant or lousy, it just is not predictable but it is usually possible to ski back to the resort now due to the artificial snow that's arround, often the snow is quite thin but the pistes will probably be fine

Congratulations at escaping the dreary English Christmas. It will be brilliant I'm sure. You don't need a vast expanse or depth of snow to ski on in the short December days anyway. There will be enough!

Brian T, Lifts will probably shut at arround 16.15, the Mother in law problem could be difficult, but there is a walking pass for the area which will let her get arround most of the mountain railways and cable cars so she could meet up with you at lunch etc. Also send her down to Interlaken at least once, also Murren and Grindelwald

Brian T, your mother-in-law, who may be a huge James Bond fan (how would I know?) should be given a licence to kill and sent on a (top secret) day's mission to the Schilthorn, Murren.

She can wander around the cablecar station, which I'm sure you know features prominently in the film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and work out devious schemes for global domination in the comfort of the scenic revolving restaurant.

You'll obviously want to brief her first by showing her the movie.

For this mission, your new identity is Brian Q.

A native of the region warned me last year not to go to Wengen early in the season, but the place is apparently a dream in the late season. Wengen is definitely on my list... snowHead

johnfmh, to be fair Wengen has had some tremendous Christmas's, I've been there with 3ft of snow in the village at that time, I've also been there with no snow in the village at that time, however even then it was possible to ski almost all the way back to the village, whatever happens I'm sure Brian T, will have a good time, there's nothing better than being in a ski resort for Christmas (unless of course it's being there all season) Laughing

johnfmh, I went the week after Easter this year and benefitted from the fact that it had dumped every day the previous week. I went back at the end of June (to walk not ski!!) and there was still a fair amount of snow around.

Late season usually = good snow
