Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

K2 MACH GS RACE, Where do I mount Bindings? 42% from back?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I just got some new 191 cm K2 MACH GS Race skis. Probably circa 2003 stock. They are racing skis and they do not have a center of boot mark on the top for binding position. I measured 3 pairs of my families straight skis and found that the center of boot mark was consistently positioned 42% from the back of the ski regardless of its length. That seems to be about the most narrow width of these skis as well. Is that a good position for the boot center?

I'm an Old-School straight ski guy that mounted hundreds of bindings in the 70's and 80's as a binding technician, but now I wonder if things have changed and if boot position is different or something. Not sure why these have no center boot mark.

Old-School, have you checked on the sidewall for a boot mark, or core centre mark?
I remember the Mach GS, but never mounted a pair.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Yes. I looked everywhere. I did notice that the writing on top of the ski that says 16mm sidewall is consistently placed on both skis but no line anywhere. I put a recorded call into the K2 Technical Support line yesterday with the question. We will see if they get back to me today. I am not too worried about it given that I could be plus or minus 1 cm from the correct position and it will have relatively little effect on the performance of the skis. So I'm going to be alright, but I would like to get it correct.

Old-School, one thing to look for is a ridge in the plastic on the sidewall. Yes, as small as that - they did it to some skis, just a ridge in the clear plastic.
Based on your calculations, I'd say you'd be close enough doing the way you described. If you can wait until the weekend, I will take a look at home and see wat old K2 information I have at home.

Old-School, Don't bother looking for a centre mark etc & mount them so that your ball of foot is over the skis Centre of Running Surface. To be more exact you align the middle of the first metatarsal head with the CRS. This was how skis used to be mounted before the manufacturers started putting their 'arbitary' centre marks on skis & will give you a personalised binding position rather than a position designed for Mr.Average.
