Poster: A snowHead

I know it's easy to cut fown a ski pole but can it be done the other way?
Firstly, I'm 6ft so I recently bought some 125cm poles and did the whole right angle test.
However, on the slopes my instructor recommended some slightly longer poles as with the skis and boots on, and the pole buried to the powder circle thing (wtf are these called anyway?), my arms were no longer at right angles. I think they need to be about 130cm and the instructor said this would help with standing upright at turns.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

you could try taking the handle off and putting something in there to stop it going back o as far but that would only be usefull for about an inch I guess.
Its a basket on the bottom

It might be simpler to shorten your legs or extend your arms a bit.

I'd go at least once more with the shorter poles before I change to longer. I've seen recommendations for shorter poles with the new shaped skis (measured with the arm at 90° with your hand on the grip as opposed to under the basket with the pole
upside down). An old school instructor will look at you and tell you that your poles are too short. You obviously were on softpack but on hard pack the tip will rest on the surface and longer poles will tend to push you back. An upright stance with knees slightly bend should get your poles in a better position.
If on the other hand you ski like the pink panther (or my wife ) with a completely upright stance then longer poles are probably in order.

GordonFreeman, get some length adjustable one. Great for bumps when it helps to have them a tad shorter. Also good if you do any hiking. Large diameter baskets are great for off-piste too.
