Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Karma vs Foil and deciding on length..

 Poster: A snowHead

Hey guys -

I've narrowed my list down to Volkl Karmas or Salomon 1080 foils - just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on either of these? I'm looking for a park/offpiste/playing ski to go with my ski-ski, if you get me Smile

I'm 6'4 and 240lb/17st ish, is getting a 177 karma (vs 185) or 174 foil (vs 182) a big mistake? I ask in part cos I can get a cheap pair of 174 foils but slightly concerned I'll get them and be irritated they're not long enough!

Cheers all,
Dave

toiletduckuk,

Don't rightly know, but I would be thinking the same - in your position - that they are too small at 177/174. For purely Off-piste, you'd want the longer lenght.

toiletduckuk, also don't rightly know. But having thought about going for the Karmas for some time I finally opted for the Mantras instead after talking to the man at Sport Conrad. My mix being 90% out in the country and 10% on piste getting to the next bit of country I don't really need a piste ski. Having always skied a bit longer I finally opted for the 190s. My argument would be : If you ski off piste then get an off piste ski. The Karma is just a bit too much of a compromise for my taste.
Now all I need is some powder to try them out on!

Mike Lawrie, Mantra...? stonking ski! Is it red or a slate colour because I skied both this year and I can't quite recall which was this year's model.

Love the metallic clunk....feels solid

toiletduckuk, I'm about half a stone lighter than you, and I would find the 177 Karmas too short for off piste, but ok for on it, and ok in the park. Hope that this helps. Very Happy

ta dudes - think I'll be going for the longer of the two whichever ski I go for. Bonus question for you Kramer, how are your Missions in the park and in general? I'll probably be aiming at 50/50 park/offpiste fwiw but I like the idea of having a ski that I won't get frustrated with when I happen to pick the wrong ski in the morning!

I've skied the 1080 Foil in 174. I'm 5'10, 12 stone, and they were fantastic. Before that I was skiing the older 03/04 1080 in 171cm (which are quite a bit softer). Both were excellent allrounders. The 1080 Foil better on firm stuff than the older 1080 (which was super in the powder). But for you I'd say the 174 would def be too short.

toiletduckuk, although I'm prepared to talk up the abilities of my Missions in all conditions, they're definitely not a park ski! Although they've got a very slight up turn at the tails, they're definitely not twin tips, or even close.

In general I think that they're excellent. They obviously work well in powder, and they're really good when its a bit cut up and slushy, but they'll also hold a carved turn well when it's hard and icy. They seem to be quite soft in the tips, whilst being quite stiff in the tails, which makes them fairly easy to ski whilst giving good feed back. Very Happy

My aim at the moment is to ski off-piste as much as I can, but make the most of the piste when I can't, for me they fit the bill perfectly. I've got them in the 183, and in the rental spec if that makes any difference.

JT, the red ones! They do feel solid. I also considered the Gotamas, but finally chickened out. They are just a tad too FAT. I'm hoping the Mantras will be great at cutting through carved up crud as well as just powder. I'm heading up to the Zugspitze later this week to try and find some powder. Will report.

Mike Lawrie,

Red for 2007... I think they'll be great, they handle well for 96mm. Only hardpack would derail them and then it would just be a a bit more effort to get the edges to bite which is the easiest place to have to do it, IMV. I can't like this ski enough, its a bit like a good engined sized BMW, that just are ........sorted... Enjoy

toiletduckuk, in that case if twins are a must, Volkl Karmas/Gotamas/Mantras seem to be good skis. I've only tried the Karmas, but I did like them.

Mantras are not twin tips (only have a raised tail) - they are however very good skis snowHead
Karmas are also very good skis (used to be my favourite ever skis until I got my Mantras!).

.... aaand Gotamas are lovely skis in soft snow. Not so good on the hardpack, but you wouldn't really expect that

Went out on my new Mantras for the first time today. Had conditions varying from pristine powder to windblown crust to carved up, frozen, thawed carved up frozen thawed crud. In all conditions THESE SKIS ROCK. Where have they been all my life? Why have I only just found them now? So many years wasted...
